Godzilla Minus Zero to Remain Grounded with the Shikishima Family Despite Globe-Trotting Kaiju Chaos

Rumbling onto screens in early November this year, Toho’s own take on their legendary kaiju looks to be even bigger than its predecessor. Godzilla Minus One shocked cinemas outside of Japan, becoming such a hit in limited screenings that thousands more were added to the slate to meet demand.

Keen to capitalise on the success of Minus One, Godzilla Minus Zero is now being teased before what will likely be a full trailer towards the end of the summer. According to the teaser and the filmmaker behind the two films, the focus will remain grounded in a human story while the kaiju chaos is expected to roam a little further afield.

Going Where the MonsterVerse is Yet to Venture

Due to a licensing arrangement between the American and Japanese moviemakers, the Toho films alternate release years with the MonsterVerse releases. Perhaps sensing an opportunity, Minus Zero will send Godzilla to America’s most iconic city, which the MonsterVerse and other Godzilla outings have yet to visit.

The final stomps of the teaser show Godzilla plodding past the Statue of Liberty, presumably to take on another kaiju in NYC itself. As the central characters of the first film are going to be involved in the sequel, and we know Godzilla has regenerated years after the events of Minus One, we can assume that something major brings it here.

Most importantly, even with Godzilla venturing to the other side of another continent and potentially clashing with another massive creature, its creator says that they’re keeping with the kind of story that enabled Minus One to be such an engaging and well-regarded film.

Takashi Yamazaki said in an interview previewing GMO that he learned a lot from the need to use a smaller lens and a tighter perspective. So here, with Godzilla’s re-emergence, the Shikishima family will once again be challenged and put through immense struggles in the face of the same horror that threatened to destroy everything.

Potentially Another Legendary Foe

We know that Godzilla will emerge for a hefty conflict out in the ocean and that something will drive the colossus to New York. Supposed leaks have also suggested that parts of the movie were either filmed at Aokigahara or will take place there.

On the former, given the history of the characters in-universe and outside of the series, Godzilla could be drawn to the US for a scrap with King Kong. A centrepiece of the MonsterVerse series, Kong came to Toho by way of a slightly dubious agreement with a US film producer. In the end, they made King Kong vs. Godzilla, which was a huge hit in 1962.

Now, Kong’s just as famous and popular as Godzilla in many parts of the world. The great ape’s legendary appeal extends well beyond film and into the collection of casino games UK players enjoy. The Kong series spans multiple entries here, and more keep getting added. Most recently, King Kong Splash Jackpot King added the famed fishing feature to the series, along with the progressive jackpot mechanic.

Kong is, by far, the biggest name that Toho could pull out of their bag of kaiju to sell the already hyped Godzilla Minus Zero. That said, fans of Minus One greatly appreciated how different the quality of the storytelling and depiction of Godzilla was compared to MonsterVerse and other Hollywood outings.

Given that Aokigahara could feature, this would imply the emergence of an iconic nemesis of Godzilla, King Ghidorah. The three-headed dragon was found in a cave in Aokigahara in the 2001 film Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. That said, if Toho goes with a lesser-known or new threat entirely, it’d only help to fuel intrigue.

Godzilla Minus Zero looks set to go even bigger than the surprise hit and Oscar-winning Minus One. Thanks to the quick-cut teaser, anticipation for what’s to come is only growing greater by the day.
