Jorja Smith Draws A Line With “I Lied, You Lied”

Jorja Smith returns with “I Lied, You Lied,” the latest preview of her forthcoming third album, What Are The Odds, arriving 21 August. The single captures a more decisive side of Smith’s songwriting, centred on the point where attraction and attachment can no longer outweigh the exhaustion of a relationship built around contradiction. Its accompanying visual, directed by EphoExecutive and filmed in Mexico City, extends that sense of movement and separation into a new visual setting.

There is a directness to Smith’s writing here. She examines the familiar patterns of mixed signals, dishonesty and emotional control before arriving at the realisation that the cycle has reached its limit. The song holds onto the complexity of still caring for someone while understanding that care alone cannot sustain a relationship. Smith moves between vulnerability and self assurance, giving the track the tension of someone processing an ending while already knowing the decision has been made.

Produced by P2J and Marco Bernardis, the track is built around electronic programming, piano and saxophone, creating a restrained backdrop that leaves space for Smith’s voice. The production does not overpower the narrative; its details sit underneath the vocal, allowing the lyrics to carry the weight. It continues Smith’s ability to place intimate songwriting within production that draws from the UK’s rich electronic lineage.

What Are The Odds appears to take that approach further, moving through UK Garage, Grime, 2 Step, UK Funky and House while maintaining the intimacy that has defined Smith’s work. Made independently with P2J, the album represents a period of trusting instinct and rediscovering the freedom within making music. “I Lied, You Lied” offers an early glimpse into that direction: sharper, more assured and connected to the sounds that have long surrounded Smith’s musical world.
