Donae’O has solidified himself in the British tapestry of Rap culture and all of its sub-genres including garage and grime. Now he has reinvented himself with the UK inspired funky house sound that is being explored in his new single ‘I don’t need’, as well as the other singles he released earlier this year.
The track combines guitar strings and a hypnotic and energetic bassline borrowing elements from the exciting amapino sound. The upbeat instrumental samples Skepta’s grime classic 'I Spy', providing a nostalgic element to the basement raves of the early and mid-2000s.
Donae’O is slick and smooth as usual with his verse as he transitions in and out of rapping and singing. His lyricism is creative as he cheekily remarks “ See you with next man playing kissing games….I know that I’m your ex but have some respect I’ve been standing there 30 days in the rain”
The track features Camden born singer-songwriter Lili Caseley who is known to create soulful pop about love and personal experiences. On this track, she finds a different lane from her usual music to bring the track together with her intoxicating vocals drawing listeners in.
Donae’O continues to show why he is considered one of the most innovative figures in British music and Lili Caseley shows why people should sit up and take notice.
