David Koma Makes Sports Stylish In His AW22 Collection

To celebrate being formally granted British citizenship, David Koma created a visual ode to the country in his AW22 collection. Being a London based brand, the country's dress codes have always bore a significant influence on his collections, however with this one he took it to the next level, directly referencing key aspects of Britishness and he chose well. If you think about it, what’s more British than class and sport?

Through his pieces he analyses the fashion conventions of the different classes, whilst reinterpreting the uniforms of the countries two favourite sports, football and rugby.

Class and identity come to the forefront as Koma pulls on cultural and subcultural fashions. Streetwear and its link with British subcultures is explored in the collections outerwear of leather and bomber jackets, alongside Scotland’s cultural tartan through the boning patterns of the corsets. All of this is glamourized of course - the streetwear bomber jackets sheared with plush Mongolian shearling, and the tartan references covered in crystal embroidery.

The party feel of Koma’s typical collections remains too. Whether it’s through the short hemlines of club dresses, or the long floaty silhouettes of ballroom gowns, all classes of British party girls are invoked.

Similar to his S/S22 collection, Koma takes a powerful woman as his muse. This time instead of motorcyclist sisters it's Lily Parr, a female footballer whose widespread success caused bans on female football games being hosted in FA Clubs. Using this, Koma places a feminine touch on sporting uniforms, and creates deliciously stylish outcomes.

From bejewelled shin caps to sporty striped dresses, Koma uses his signature feminine glamour to create sporty chic. Some of the funnest reinterpretations come in the form of a bandeau top and skirt set made from a football scarf

and a bralette embroidered with the English rugby rose in crystals.

The colour scheme of red, and blue clearly draws upon the British flag but also nicely complements the sporting theme, with these colours also being the uniform colours of many big British football teams.

If all that isn’t enough, this collection marks the debut of Koma’s shoe range. Keeping in with the level of luxury afforded to his clothing, the shoes draw on haute couture perfume flacons with the bolted silver structure design. The look is completed with a chrome cap and of course a signature heel.

If theres one thing to take from this collection, it’s that we can always rely on David Koma to imaginatively reinvent a source of inspiration and do it without loosing his sultry, stylish touch.
