Popularity of Slingo Should Inspire Filmmakers to Make Hybrid Genre Films

Updated: Nov 12

Throughout the history of film, different genres have enjoyed success at different times. Back in the 1940s and 1950s, for instance, the Western was the most popular offering, and in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a heavy focus on action films.

Filmmakers have always had to adapt to changes in the entertainment landscape, and now they may need to explore the idea of hybrid offerings more. This is because games like Slingo highlight how modern audiences like to get a two-for-one experience in their entertainment offerings.

Slingo Has Been a Huge Success in the Online Casino Market

The online casino market is constantly evolving with new innovations, and Slingo has been one of the greatest success stories of recent years. The game combines two classics – bingo and slots – and gives players a new way to enjoy these in a hybrid offering.

Browsing Slingo at Paddy Power reveals more than 20 games now, highlighting how this category is rapidly growing in popularity. Along with combining bingo and slots, the games also have their own themes, with Ancient Egypt and fishing-themed games among many others.

Slingo’s success could be down to the fact that modern players want to find the things they love in the same place. Instead of having to play bingo and slots separately, they can now play them together at the same time.

Modern Audiences May Want More Hybrid Films

This concept of people wanting things merged together to enjoy at the same time has been apparent in film over the years, with some of the best offerings of all time crossing over between different genres. Recently, Parasite was one of the best examples of this, as the South Korean offering included surreal, comic, and thriller elements. According to a review in The Guardian, this all added up to create a ‘gasp-inducing masterpiece.’

Despite the success of Parasite and other genre-mixing films like Everything Everywhere, All at Once, hybrid pictures are still few and far between. Even though a critic writing for Vital Thrills described the Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert movie as a rare classic, studios tend to stick to tried and tested formulas. This makes it easier to predict how well a movie might fare at the box office.

Given the success of Slingo, though, this could be the ideal time for filmmakers to start thinking outside the box. They could experiment with rare blends of genres, offering up combinations that have never been seen before. This would be a bit of a gamble as there’s no way of knowing what combination would have the most success, but the filmmaker who managed to strike on a winning formula would go down in history. Indeed, if someone managed to figure out the film equivalent of Slingo, they could go down in history.

It may be time for filmmakers to show a bit more ambition and leave the restricted parameters of classic genres in cinema. Slingo’s popularity shows that people love hybrids, as they offer more of their favourite things in the same place.
