Monopoly Movie Looks to Capitalise on Potential Rush of Classic Product Films

Right now, Hollywood is obsessed with sequels, spin-offs, or reboots. Some see it as a great way to expand on beloved films, others see it as lazy and the latest additions being more about making money than telling great stories. In this landscape, the Barbie movie from 2023 stood out as a unique entry. It just so happened that it, coupled with Oppenheimer, created a cinematic buzz not seen since Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Drawing from known IPs not based on film has become a hot trend, and while some companies have been doing it for years, the likes of classic products and video games are being increasingly tapped for adaptations. The next huge name on the list looks to be Monopoly to expand on Hasbro’s set of products coming to the big screen. Interestingly, it’s being created by the woman who essentially became the face of Mattel last year.

Mattel movie star to help bring Monopoly to the cinema

Following the success of Barbie from its epic marketing to the final box-office haul, the star of the movie Margot Robbie is now looking to more mighty IPs to bring to moviegoers. Her company, Lucky Chap, will next be producing a live-action Monopoly film, with Hasbro Entertainment co-producing. They certainly succeeded with Barbie, and arguably, Monopoly is a bigger and better-known property with a larger sphere of appeal.

Monopoly goes beyond board games. Monopoly Go! is one of the biggest mobile games in the world right now and there’s even a fully-branded Monopoly Casino online. According to a company that offers extensive reviews and access to exclusive bonuses, Monopoly Casino scored very well at 4.2 out of 5.0. It’s also particularly popular thanks to its array of Monopoly live games and the no-wagering bonus for Monopoly Paradise Mansion.

Monopoly might just be Hasbro’s biggest and best-known property. However, it’d take some doing for the Monopoly movie to become Hasbro’s biggest cinematic hit. Since 2007, live-action Transformers have been a staple of the cinematic slate and continue to collect stacks of cash. It peaked in 2011 with Transformers: Dark of the Moon earning over $1.1 billion, but even the recent Rise of the Beasts collected $438 million worldwide.

Hasbro may be going head-to-head with Mattel

Mattel certainly hopes to achieve some of the success that Hasbro has, and Barbie couldn’t have provided a better launch pad, revenue-wise. Hasbro’s bringing out Monopoly, and they’re said to have a Power Rangers, G.I. Joe, and Cluedo in the works. Mattel’s mighty catalogue can certainly go toe-to-toe with these properties and even the juggernaut Transformers movie series.

On the way to the cinema from Mattel looks to be a diverse collection of new movies from classic products. Being worked on right now, reportedly, are films based on Uno, Hot Wheels, He-Man, She-Ra, Magic 8 Ball, and Boglins. Naturally, there are plenty of big names tied to some of them, including Kyle Allen in a Masters of the Universe movie and J.J. Abrams for the Hot Wheels movie.

Hasbro’s making a big play to get Monopoly to the cinema, and they’ll be hoping for some more magic from Robbie’s production company and sound writing to make it a hit.
