Loving the Notting Hill Carnival

Considered one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, there are currently around 300 different languages spoken in London. Being culturally diverse isn’t new to this town. Many events celebrate this diversity, but perhaps none are as popular as the Notting Hill Carnival.

Since 1966, it’s been an annual event that has consistently kept growing. There are many attractions that draw people to support the purpose of the Carnival, with the live acts being high up there.

Why Live?

We go because we love live! It’s a chance to go to a one-off event where anything can happen. Going with friends or family makes it a great way to get together and blow off steam. But did you know that research suggests that going to live events is actually good for us?

Seriously, it gives us validation when we see like-minded people attending the same event as us. They’re usually there for the same reason as you are: to have a good time and enjoy the event. Being together like this allows a crowd to share a common identity with people who’ll respond in the same way as you.

However, it’s not always necessary to go to a live event to experience a live event. With the internet, it’s now possible to participate in one from the comfort of your home. For example, K-pop groups like EXO and Day6 have performed live online concerts for their fans to see wherever they are around the world. Other forms of entertainment follow the same trend, like live bingo, which allows you to play with other people from the comfort of your home whenever the mood suits you.

Notting Hill Carnival

It kicked off in the mid-1960s, organised by a social worker and activist, Rhaune Laslett, as an event to promote and integrate the different cultures in the local area. As the decades have passed, it’s grown to become an internationally renowned event, overcoming adversity and welcoming inclusivity along with diversity in respect of the other cultures in London.

On the same bank holiday weekend in August, the Notting Hill Carnival makes its mark in the Notting Hill area of Kensington, London. With booming sound systems, great food and stunning costumes that leave spectators breathless, thanks to Mas Bands, it’s a time to celebrate cultural diversity. We’ve only just touched the surface of what’s on offer at this live event.

The Notting Hill Carnival today is a lively event that welcomes everyone. There are competitions, like the Panorama Champions, where respected steel bands pit their skills against one another to be crowned with this prestigious title. There are also plenty of DJs playing tunes. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate music, culture, fashion and life, not only in London but most of the UK.
