L​ykke Li drops “still sad still sexy” EP

Swedish pop artist ‘Lykke Li’ delivered one of 2018s most successful and talked about albums with ‘so sad so sexy’ last year which was appropriately described by The Guardian as “despair you can dance to”. The thirty-three year old creatively infused her brand of melancholic, glossy, electronic indie-pop with elements of trap, R&B, and modern hip-hop by collaborating with producers such as Malay, (Frank Ocean) Skrillex and Emile Haynie to name a few.

After riding high on the success of her feature with Mark Ronson ‘Late Night Feelings’ Li released the six-track extension to her previous album this month humorously titled ‘still sad still sexy'. The EP (which is the perfect accompaniment to late-night drive home) provides us with a lux and faded pop vibe full of warm hazy synths, memorable vocal lines, and infectious beats. The EP comprises of two remixes, two alternate versions, and two brand new songs.

The two remixes 'sex money feelings die' and 'two nights part ii' feature the likes of Snowsa, Lil Baby, Skrillex, and Ty Dolla $ign and start the album on a more upbeat dance energy. One of the standout tracks on this EP for me is the soothingly mellow 'Baby Doves', a retrospective and pensive track where Li compares the naivety of being in the early stages of love to childlike innocence, all while reflecting on the false promises that come with that carelessness.

The final two alternate version tracks on the EP 'so sad so sexy' and 'deep end' reacquaint the listener to the songs injected with an entirely new set of emotions. The chrome production has been replaced by simplistic and mellow piano instrumentals, opening the mix and letting the vocals and lyrics resonate even deeper with the listener.

Next month Li is playing at female-focused festival YOLA DÍA which she helped co-organise. Acts performing include Megan Thee Stallion, CupcakKe, Cat Power, SOPHIE, Courtney Love, Empress Of, and Kelsey Lu. In a survey conducted by Pitchfork last year it was revealed that women only make up 19% of the average festival lineup and in an interview with Vogue Magazine Li said:

We all felt like there’s a lack of diversity and so few female headliners on most festival bills, and I thought the time was right to celebrate strong women. We got the opportunity to create a festival, so we did it.
