Beams, the newest cultural venue from Broadwick Live, known for creating some of the UK's most ambitious and acclaimed venues, events, and creative development projects like Printworks London, Depot Mayfield, and Field Day, features an exhibition curated by digital artist and curator Alex Czetwertynski and produced in collaboration with arts and culture consultancy, That Right There.
The exhibition, titled Thin Air, showcases the works of emerging global contemporary artists within Beams' cavernous setting, exploring the hidden complexities that shape our world. The selected creatives produce artworks on a monumental scale, with the exhibition layout influenced by their interaction with the space. Among the works on display is James Clar's installation Cleanse/Mantra (110hz), which uses frequencies to induce trance and heightened imagination. Matthew Schreiber's new work uses lasers to connect all dimensions of Beams with light, atmospheric haze, and geometric space.
Other featured artists present site-specific adaptations of their existing works, such as Seoul-based collective Kimchi and Chips, who produced a film in collaboration with Rosa Menkman on site at Beams, inspired by spectacle, illusion, and the semi-material mode of existence. 404.zero fills a 26,000 square foot room with a work comprising 1,000 beams of light, programmed to create a series of existential experiences.
Beams is dedicated to raising money for local community projects, including Community Food Enterprise and local food banks, with Thin Air partnering with local schools and offering free tickets to the local community. The venue is also posting job opportunities throughout Newham to support the local area. In 2022, £10,000 was raised, and Beams is committed to continuing this work in 2023 and beyond. With its inaugural exhibition, Beams has established itself as one of London's most impactful and experimental art spaces.
