Do’s and Don’ts for Keeping Your Hair Healthy and Nourished

We spend hours on skincare and makeup, but often treat our hair as an afterthought. Know that great hair doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of small choices you make every day.

Many people invest in expensive hair care products, but ignore simple do’s and don’ts that truly matter. This guide offers practical hair-care tips and common mistakes to avoid to help your hair stay healthy, strong, and full of life. Let’s get in!

Do Wash Moderately

There is a common misconception that people with oily hair should wash it every day to prevent oil buildup. In reality, the sebum your scalp produces is vital to healthy, shiny hair. When you overwash your hair, it loses essential oils, leading to weakened roots and excessive breakage.

The worst part? When you wash away all natural oils, your scalp may overcompensate by producing more oil, causing hair to become greasy faster.

Washing hair in moderation is important. Experts recommend washing your hair every 2-3 days, while those with thick or curly hair can do it every 3-7 days.

Do Use Heat Protection

Heat styling tools like blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners can cause hair damage if heat-protective measures are not taken. Always apply a heat protectant spray before using any of these styling tools.

A heat protectant spray acts as a barrier and seals the hair cuticle. Moreover, it helps reduce frizz and creates a smoother, shinier finish.

Do Take Supplements

A plethora of hair issues are caused by nutrient deficiency. While taking a balanced diet can help, it’s not always enough. This is where supplements come in.

For instance, bovine collagen supplements provide essential amino acids needed to build keratin. These supplements often combine Types I and III collagen for comprehensive support. Benefits include improved scalp health, enhanced follicle strength, and age-related thinning.

Don’t Brush Wet Hair

This is a rookie mistake. Most people don’t realise that wet hair is incredibly vulnerable. Brushing wet hair weakens its protein structure, making it more elastic, fragile, and prone to stretching and snapping.

Instead, wait until your hair is 80-90% dry before you brush. Moreover, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle from the ends up to the roots. You can also apply conditioner or detangling spray to reduce friction and breakage.

Don’t Neglect the Scalp

Your scalp deserves just as much care as the ends. Healthy hair always starts at the roots. So if your scalp is oily, clogged, or irritated, your hair will struggle to grow strong and shiny.

Don’t overload the scalp with chemical products. Moreover, use gentle, sulphate-free shampoos to keep the scalp clean.

You can also strengthen hair follicles by gently massaging the scalp daily. This will stimulate blood flow and keep the scalp nourished.

Don’t Make Tight Hairstyles

Tight ponytails and buns can stress the hair and damage the roots. Wearing tight hairstyles once in a while is okay, but doing it too often can lead to thinning edges. If your hairstyle is giving you a headache, that’s a clear sign it’s too tight. You should also switch up your hairstyles regularly to avoid stressing the same areas every day
