Bonheur by Matt Abé Is A New Chapter in Mayfair’s Culinary Story

On Upper Brook Street in Mayfair, a new chapter of London’s fine dining scene quietly begins. Bonheur by Matt Abé, the first solo venture from the acclaimed chef patron of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, has opened its doors at the former home of the legendary Le Gavroche, a space steeped in gastronomic history. But where legacy once stood, Abé brings renewal and a vision shaped by craftsmanship and the pursuit of pure happiness, the very meaning of Bonheur.

Abé’s path to Bonheur is one of quiet perseverance and excellence. Born in Sydney, he began cooking at sixteen, working under Matt Moran at Aria before joining Melbourne’s Vue de Monde. By twenty-two, he was in London, joining Gordon Ramsay’s team and rising to helm Restaurant Gordon Ramsay as Chef Patron. Under his stewardship, the restaurant retained its three Michelin stars for eight consecutive years, a testament to his discipline and creative integrity.

Bonheur is a space where his philosophy has room to breathe, a celebration of the beauty in restraint. Abé’s menu is based in classical French technique, pulses with contemporary spirit and a deep respect for ingredients. His cooking weaves together threads from his Australian upbringing and Asian culinary philosophies, producing dishes that feel both grounded and elevated. Guests can explore this through three dining experiences, à la carte, or the tasting journeys titled Journey and Dream, while an intimate six-seat Chef’s Table, Petit Bonheur, offers a front-row seat to the creative process behind the kitchen’s meticulous artistry.

Designed by Russell Sage Studio, the restaurant’s interiors translate that same philosophy into atmosphere. The space unfolds like a sensory essay on warmth and texture, deep burgundy velvet banquettes and ochre tones recalling the Australian landscape. Guests enter through a glowing lounge, before descending into a subterranean dining room alive with sculptural furniture and floral installations. Abstract works by London artist Rajan Seth ripple across the walls, mirroring the subtle movement of Abé’s dishes.

Bonheur feels like an exhale, a return to what truly matters in dining is precision, emotion, and joy. Matt Abé has built not just a restaurant, but a sanctuary for those who seek meaning in the details. Bonheur is more than a name; it’s a feeling, one plated, poured, and served with grace.
