The Bloomsbury Club's Aperitivo Hour Is a Hidden Slice of Milan in the Heart of London

The pace of Tottenham Court Road rarely slows. Tourists weave between theatres, commuters hurry towards the Underground, and Oxford Street's constant rhythm spills into the surrounding streets. Just a few moments away, behind the elegant façade of The Bloomsbury Hotel, another world quietly unfolds. Descending into The Bloomsbury Club Bar reveals a secluded sanctuary inspired by the artistic legacy of the Bloomsbury Group, where conversation, creativity and good company are given room to flourish. It is here that Italian aperitivo culture has found an unlikely yet fitting home in the centre of the capital.

The experience begins before the first drink arrives. Encased in a beautifully crafted leather-bound menu embossed with gold, guests are introduced to the story of the Bloomsbury Group, the pioneering collective of writers, artists and intellectuals who transformed the neighbourhood into a hub of free thinking over a century ago. The menu explains how figures including Virginia Woolf and her contemporaries rejected convention in favour of creativity and self expression, and that same philosophy continues to shape the atmosphere of the bar today. Every element encourages guests to linger, talk and embrace the pleasure of slowing down.

Running from 5pm until 9pm every Tuesday to Thursday, Aperitivo Hour brings one of Italy's most cherished traditions to central London. Guests can enjoy signature cocktails and spritzes from £13, or choose the complete £18 Aperitivo experience, pairing a handcrafted cocktail with a generous platter of Italian charcuterie, gherkins, focaccia and pan con tomate. Created as the ideal pause between work and dinner, the experience centres around sharing, conversation and unhurried enjoyment, echoing the social rituals that have defined aperitivo culture across Italy for generations.

The orchestrator of the programme is Bar Manager Antonio Paperiello, whose passion for Italian hospitality elevates the experience beyond the drinks themselves. Recently named a World Aperitivo Ambassador at the Aperitivo Festival 2026 in Milan by the Italian Trade & Investment Agency, Antonio has been recognised for championing authentic Italian aperitivo culture outside Italy. His expertise is reflected throughout the menu, bringing a genuine Milanese sensibility to every serve while ensuring guests are welcomed with warmth, generosity and attentive service from the moment they arrive.

The cocktail list demonstrates that same commitment to mixology. The Prima Sera, meaning "early evening", combines Rinomato Bitter Scuro, Mancino Vermouth Amaranto, Akashi Tai Umeshu, an Italian amaro blend and pink grapefruit soda for a bright yet bittersweet introduction to the evening. The Garibaldi delivers timeless simplicity through Campari and freshly squeezed orange juice, while the Sottosole, meaning "under the sun", layers Tanqueray Gin with Mancino Vermouth Amaranto, lavender bitters, Campari and delicate lemon foam. Alongside these signatures is a collection of Italian spritzes including Aperol, Campari, Hugo, Beesou and Pomelle, each prepared with the same attention to balance and tradition.

The food follows the same philosophy of quality and simplicity. The aperitivo platter arrives generously arranged with Italian charcuterie, cheeses, crisp gherkins, warm focaccia and fresh pan con tomate, encouraging guests to graze throughout the evening while cocktails are refreshed and conversation continues. It captures the essence of aperitivo dining, where the focus is on bringing people together over thoughtfully sourced ingredients and relaxed hospitality.

Hidden beneath The Bloomsbury Hotel, the secluded terrace sits in striking contrast to the energy of nearby Tottenham Court Road. Trailing greenery winds through timber beams overhead while weaving branches frame intimate seating areas dressed with plush cushions. Lanterns, candlelight and hundreds of twinkling fairy lights illuminate exposed brick walls and patterned tiled floors, creating the atmosphere of a secret garden after dark. From July onwards, live music accompanies Aperitivo Hour, adding another dimension to evenings designed for after-work drinks, summer dates and long conversations with friends.

Our recommendation is to embrace the full Aperitivo Experience, pairing one of Antonio Paperiello's expertly crafted signature cocktails with the generous Italian sharing platter. The Prima Sera stands out as the drink to order, offering a beautifully balanced combination of bittersweet citrus, vermouth and pink grapefruit soda that captures the essence of a summer evening. Paired with slices of Italian charcuterie, it delivers everything that makes aperitivo culture so enduring: exceptional flavours, generous hospitality and the simple pleasure of sharing good food and drinks with great company.

During London's warmer months, there are few places we'd recommend more. The terrace provides a peaceful escape from the heat and crowds of Tottenham Court Road, with trailing greenery, candlelight and fairy lights creating an intimate setting that comes alive as the sun begins to set.

What stays with you long after leaving is not simply the cocktails or the beautiful surroundings, but the sense of genuine hospitality. Every detail, from the storytelling inside the menu to the thoughtful service and carefully composed drinks, reflects an understanding that the finest experiences are never rushed. The Bloomsbury Club offers a rare opportunity to step away from London's relentless pace and rediscover the pleasure of conversation, calmness and taking time to savour the evening. Whether you're planning a summer date, catching up with friends after work or looking for a relaxed start to an evening in the city, The Bloomsbury Club offers an atmosphere that encourages you to slow down, stay a little longer and savour one of London's most charming seasonal experiences.
