Loyle Carner has returned with his new track which features on his hotly anticipated album “hugo”. It has taken the media by storm with Wonderland stating that “Loyle delivers nothing short of a masterpiece in the form of turbo-charged verses about his inner anxieties”, many more in the shape of The Observer, The Times and Complex to name a few lent both a willing ear and an impassioned review, as Loyle Carner looks to elevate beyond his already rapidly growing status.
“Nobody Knows (Ladas Road)” in its simplest form describes a journey of self discovery - when analysed at length it’s a creative masterpiece ; and it sees Loyle Carner flesh out both the foundations and futures of his life’s story, via every possible creative medium accessible to him.
His lyricism describes a chequered past that left him confused and disillusioned about the concept of fatherhood and both his heritage and lineage.
Resolution is sought throughout, with Loyle Carner consistently questioning various facets of his own life, “Are you lost? Uh, or are you just another man?” and “The news lied, but he died. So who am I? Ay, yo, I'm asking who am I?” provide examples of this. He is then in conclusion almost resigned to forgiveness, as he fears the loathing of his father will become a consistent cycle and this is played out beautifully in the slow panning out of the Uncanny directed video, which immaculately illustrates this ideology.
The purposeful direction of the music video is emphasised by its director Uncanny when he goes on to say:
“We aimed to push even more focus and attention towards the powerful words by stripping back any distractions, not even allowing for cuts. Through this, we were able to give the focus to Loyle and allow space for his performance solely to captivate the viewers attention.
Loyle Carner also said the following on the lyricism:
“nobody knows is a song about fatherhood, forgiveness and the gaps in-between. the space between two absolutes. everybody knows what it feels like to be othered, these are the words I wrote, when I felt that way”
The track does also manages to beautifully interpolate the 70s RnB/soul and gospel track “Nobody Knows” by Pastor T.L. Barrett and the Youth For Christ Choir. This sample moves to add a glowing nostalgic and regal tint to an already emphatic and hard hitting track.
