Lexa Gates Draws On Her Life Experiences on Sophomore Album I Am

Lexa Gates steps into a defining moment of her career with the release of her sophomore album I Am, a project that feels both inward-looking and quietly assured. Known for moving fluidly between rapping, singing, and production, Gates uses this record to slow things down and speak plainly, allowing emotion and reflection to take precedence over spectacle.

The title I Am holds layered significance, drawing directly from Gates’ birth name, Ivanna Alexandra Martinez, and transforming it into a declaration of identity. Throughout the album, she treats her own life as source material, weaving personal history and present day uncertainty into songs that feel confessional without becoming exposed. This is a project built on alignment, capturing an artist learning to stand more comfortably within herself as she grows.

The record’s emotional core comes into sharp focus on “I Don’t Even Know,” a standout track that traces the tension between searching for clarity and accepting the unknown. It reflects a wider theme that runs across the album: the idea that self discovery is not linear, and that doubt can coexist with confidence. Across its 18 tracks, Gates explores vulnerability and emotional fatigue, often leaving space in the production for her voice to carry the weight of the message.

I Am is shaped by a collaborative group of producers including Emile Haynie, Jasper Harris, and Black Noise, whose subtle and textured contributions give the album its sense of cohesion. Previously released tracks like “Latency,” “Past It,” “Nothing to Worry About,” and “Estranged” slot naturally into the larger narrative, reinforcing the album’s reflective tone. With I Am, Lexa Gates delivers a body of work that prioritises honesty and intention, marking a step closer to a version of herself that feels grounded, self defined, and unmistakably real.
