Krug and Max Richter Present 'Every Note Counts' at London's Roundhouse

On 10 February, New Wave were invited to experience an extraordinary champagne tasting and music listening experience at London's Roundhouse. In collaboration with French champagne brand Krug, British composer, pianist and producer Max Richter became the latest member to mark Krug's next chapter in the House's ongoing dialogue between music and champagne. This creative series has previously included collaborations such as the late Ryuichi Sakamoto and so it was only fitting for Richter to lead. Max Richter stands as one of the most impactful composers of his era. His blend of classical methods with electronic technology, showcased in his genre-defining solo albums and numerous scores for film, dance, art, and fashion, has garnered him a global fanbase and paved the way for a new generation of musicians.

Titled Every Note Counts, the evening brought together Krug Cellar Master Julie Cavil and Richter for an immersive exploration of craftsmanship across disciplines. At its heart were three original compositions titled Clarity, Ensemble and Sinfonia and they were each inspired by one of Krug’s celebrated 2008 releases: Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2008, Krug 2008 and Krug Grande Cuvée 164ème Édition. Guests were ushered in the centre of the performance area to sit and enjoy these three champagnes in line with each composition with piano played by Richter and a full orchestra.

The collaboration unfolded as a genuine creative exchange as Richter immersed himself in Krug’s world by visiting vineyards and cellars and drawing parallels between the meticulous layering of champagne and the architecture of orchestral music to result was a sensory conversation enjoyed immensely. Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée takes over 20 years to craft, using reserve wines that are preserved for up to 15 years before being blended and then kept for another 7 years in Krug cellars.

The evening continued with a four-course dinner by Krug Ambassade Chef Adam Handling MBE, who that same day earned a Michelin star for his restaurant, Ugly Butterfly. His menu was designed to echo the depth and character of the 2008 expressions, reinforcing the theme that precision and patience underpin both culinary and oenological art.

The trilogy of compositions titled Krug from Soloist to Orchestra in 2008 – Act 2 is now available here on streaming platforms and via Krug’s website, extending the experience beyond the Roundhouse walls.
