Morgan Munroe Is A Vocal Powerhouse Ready To Rewrite The Script She's Tearing Up

Once in a blue moon, you unearth a song that captivates you to the point of compulsion. A song that transforms you out of your shitty box room in Battersea and into a sea of sonorous wonderment, where cadence and emotion are within the same entity. By the time Morgan Munroe ushered in the line “I love you, but I’m not in love with you anymore” on her astounding and ardent single ‘Mutual’, I was transfixed.

The Leicester-born, London-based singer/songwriter has been on a transformative and graft-laden journey to this point, working her way up through the industry from the bottom. Using lockdown to kick start her music career, Morgan had the right mindset to find light within the drab dullness of solitary confinement: “When lockdown hit, everyone was so depressed by it and uncertain about what they were going to do. I had a part time job at the time because music wasn’t paying all the bills, so when lockdown hit I was ecstatic because I didn’t have to go to work and I could focus all my energy into music. I took it as a blessing in disguise. I went ham with Insta live competitions, home music videos, taking courses, broadening my skills. I used the time to focus on my passion, it was amazing for me”. When asked for her advice to wannabe creatives who are trying to begin their respective artistic journey, Morgan advised that “social media is a massive thing. As much as no one likes to admit it, it’s definitely one of the most important aspects of a musician’s brand and career. Also, getting yourself out there - posting singing videos, going to open mic nights and performing as much as possible. Getting on the live circuit really helped me.”

Finally and rightfully, Morgan now finds herself among the most hotly-tipped names in an alternative scene overflowing with talent. Stylistically hard to pinpoint, being boxed in is not something that Morgan plans on falling into any time soon: “my voice is very much R&B and soul, whereas the beats can be more eclectic and experimental, they might have elements of trap, hip hop or jazz. People call it indie R&B but it’s not, it’s more alternative or future R&B. I don’t really know how to define it. I don’t like restrictions when I’m writing, I just want to be free and create.” Her emotive writing and colourful instrumentals uphold a sonic ideology of fervour and expression, but it’s her generational voice that truly transcends Munroe into a lane of her own. No adjective can begin to describe it. Just hear for yourself.

Recent offering‘Mutual’, is an epitomisation of Munroe’s talent. Vocally jaw-dropping, instrumentally vibrant and lyrically relatable, it’s a statement track to the industry, her fans and her peers. Showcasing her appetite for the unconventional, the visual accompaniment for ‘Mutual’ is another example of the creative nuance that Morgan is driving through her music. A tale of lust, love and revenge, the video takes a more sinister turn than the song's narrative. Discussing the video, the singer commented “I don’t like realistic music videos. I didn’t want to portray the story in a stereotypical, conventional way. I didn’t want it to be cliched. The idea behind the song is quite oxymoronic, which I wanted to play around with. If I don’t want to be with him but don’t want him to be with anyone else, what’s an unreasonable solution? Killing him! I wanted to play a role and characterise myself. We wanted to bring a film noir style to the video.”

'Space’, the follow up single to ‘Mutual’, and the second offering from the singer’s upcoming EP Elvira, ensues on a similar narrative direction to its predecessor. Sophisticated, swooning and sexy, the track highlights the layered artistic persona of Munroe, with helpings of introspection and humility served with cheeky charisma and flawless vocality. As the EP begins to take shape, Morgan’s anticipation grows and grows: “I’m excited! Apprehensive of course, but I’ve been waiting for it to come out for such a long time that I just want to share it now.”

Confident in her ability and focused on her ambitions, it’s clear that Morgan Munroe is going right to the top. “There’s literally no boundaries for me, I want to do everything” she concludes, and it’s hard to argue with her.
