El Willy HiFi’s in Madrid is Designed for Sound

In the Justicia neighbourhood of Madrid, El Willy HiFi introduces aesthetics, but with sound. This listening bar reverses the process, allowing audio to shape the entire spatial experience. Every decision stems from how music is heard, not just how the space is seen, from proportions to materials and layout, creating an environment where listening becomes the central act.

Designed by Canitiera Studio, the architecture deliberately avoids excess, stripping back anything that might distract from the experience of sound. Instead of commanding attention, the space operates quietly. This minimal approach allows the room to feel considered without feeling designed in a traditional sense, reinforcing the idea that the true focal point is not the space itself, but what moves through it.

A sound system developed in collaboration with IFAUDIO is a key feature, treated as a foundation. Custom wooden speakers are integrated seamlessly into the architecture, calibrated specifically to the room’s acoustics. The emphasis is not on loudness, but on clarity, allowing each track to retain its depth, texture and rhythm. Materials such as natural wood, leather and bronze contribute to a warm, enveloping atmosphere, while textiles and heavy curtains play a dual role, softening the space visually while shaping how sound travels within it.

The layout further reinforces this sense of equality between elements. The DJ booth is embedded into the environment, removing any sense of hierarchy between performer and audience. Music, architecture and people exist on the same level, creating a continuous flow, creating an authentic experience. This philosophy extends to the bar, where a cocktail menu by Fabián Legari mirrors the structure of a vinyl set, prioritising balance, progression and precision over excess.

Even the food offering follows this logic suit in quality. Small plates, from oysters with varied dressings to selected anchovies and curated cheese boards, are designed to complement rather than compete with the atmosphere. The result is a space that shifts effortlessly from a quiet afternoon setting to a more energetic night environment, without losing its identity. In a landscape increasingly driven by visual culture, El Willy HiFi stands apart as a venue designed not to be photographed, but to be experienced through sound.
