Don Toliver brings back the 70s with New Single 'Do It Right'

Far from being the only musician who looks towards the past for inspiration, singer/songwriter Don Toliver's 'Do it Right’ is a contemporary twist on a classic, sampling S.O.S Band’s ‘Take Your Time (Do It Right).

The Houston native inhabits a jumpy trap beat whilst softly singing the addictive hook in a seductive murmur, "Baby you can do it, take your time, do it right, You can do it, baby, do it tonight." It's almost hypnotic in the way that Toliver effortlessly infuses sultry teases as he offers words of encouragement to egg on his love interest.

This melodic trap-infused pop sound matches what we come to expect with Toliver in terms of beat selection, known for his smoked-out R&B, rap, pop and rock vibe that is delivered in his signature style.

The track is a dedication to his beloved, but also a smoothly rendered record with deep rustling harmonies and hymns that remind me of the timber vibrations of an old-school barbershop quartet. The backing vocals blended with the production to create the perfect nostalgic but otherworldly sound that is spiritual.

Pulsing with that feel-good reckless vibe of the 70s the visuals, directed by Alex Moors, Don Toliver is positioned in a 70s-themed disco dressed in a flamboyant red suit. We see the artist party and enjoy himself dancing throughout.

The video also hints at the direction and influence of the type of music that Toliver will be drawing on for the next stage of his music career and future project.

Recently, Dom Toliver delivered a live performance of the track and his song ‘Way Bigger’ on Rhianna's Savage X Fenty show. The latter song, which appears on his 2021 album Life of a DON demonstrates the artist's need for excitement and self-exploration which is a theme found throughout the project and landed no.2 on the Billboard Top R&B/ Hip Hop charts.
