Don Julio Última Reserva Celebrates the Legacy of Mexican Craft & Tequila with Artist Javier Barrios

Luxury today is increasingly defined by provenance, storytelling and artistry, and Don Julio Última Reserva arrives as a compelling example of all three. The ultra-exclusive expression marks the final agave field planted by founder Don Julio González and his family in 2006, preserving a moment in history that began when he established his distillery in 1942. More than eight decades after reshaping perceptions of tequila through a meticulous process, his final harvest has become one of the house's rarest releases, with only 318 bottles allocated to the UK.

The significance of Última Reserva extends far beyond rarity. Matured using the Solera ageing method, the tequila carries forward the character of Don Julio González's final agave crop through a detailed ageing process. Resting first in oak barrels previously used for bourbon before spending its final stage in seasoned Madeira wine casks, the spirit develops remarkable depth. Notes of toasted oak, caramel and dark chocolate sit alongside cooked agave, ripe banana, mango, apricot and orange peel, finishing with honeyed agave and lingering cocoa. Every element reflects the patience and precision that established Don Julio as one of the defining names in luxury tequila.

For its UK debut, Don Julio expands the conversation beyond the bottle through a collaboration with acclaimed Mexican artist Javier Barrios. Known for work exploring mythology, life, death and utopian imagination, Barrios has designed a limited-edition silk scarf inspired by the orchid, a recurring symbol throughout his practice. Drawing on memories of his native Jalisco and the landscapes surrounding the town of Tequila, the artwork references jade and turquoise, connecting ancient Mexican symbolism with contemporary visual culture. The result transforms the launch into a dialogue between heritage, craftsmanship and artistic expression.

The collaboration speaks to a wider movement across luxury, where spirits brands are increasingly investing in cultural partnerships that resonate with collectors and creative communities. Fashion houses have long understood the value of limited-edition objects that exist beyond clothing, and premium drinks are following a similar path by commissioning artists whose work gives products lasting cultural relevance. Barrios' scarf becomes part of that conversation, existing as both an artwork and a collectible. Only 150 will be available free through the Plaster store in Soho from 23 July, adding another layer of exclusivity to the release.

Última Reserva also arrives at a time when consumers are seeking experiences that honour craftsmanship in its purest form. Don Julio recommends serving the tequila neat over a single large hand-cut ice cube, allowing its complex profile to evolve slowly in the glass. The ritual mirrors the philosophy behind its creation: patience, attention to detail and an appreciation for every stage of the process. Every sip carries the legacy of a family whose commitment transformed tequila from a regional spirit into a global luxury category.

Retailing at £400 through luxury retailers including Selfridges and Harrods, with select on-trade experiences priced at £980 per bottle, Don Julio Última Reserva occupies a rare space where heritage, scarcity and contemporary culture intersect. The collaboration with Javier Barrios reinforces that luxury is no longer defined solely by what is consumed, but by the stories, and creative vision that surround it. Through one final agave field, one extraordinary tequila and one collectible artwork, Don Julio presents a tribute to Mexican excellence.
