A Met to Remember

After the chaos of last year's Met, it seems that this year, Anna Wintour was vigilant about guests abiding by the theme, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty." The spectacle became an ode to Lagerfeld's contributions to fashion houses, including Chanel, Fendi, and his own eponymous line. While applause can be given to those who reinterpreted his pieces, such as Jennie Kim in a white and black vintage ensemble from Lagerfeld's Chanel Fall 1990 ready-to-wear collection, I believe those who truly deserve it are the ones who took the theme, dissected and redefined it, Specifically, newer designers who translated their own interpretations of Lagerfeld's legacy line of beauty in their unique silhouettes.

It's no secret his views and beliefs on immigrants, plus-size models, and the Me Too movement were abhorrent and odious. Therefore, it's essential to question why the Met's theme wasn't a concept but rather a person. Why couldn't it just be a celebration of a line of beauty? Then again, it's much easier to separate the art from the artist. Fashion has never been an industry where designers are held accountable, take for instance Demna and Alexander Wang. I have an inkling that many guests thought, "Whatever this guy has done, it's messed up, but let me show up and show out because a long time ago, these spaces wouldn't have welcomed me." And indeed, they showed up and showed out, not honouring Karl per se, but their journey, their beauty, and, in some twisted way, I am here for it.
