Spoort and Rasharn Powell Collaborate On Soul Track ‘Never Call Home’

The Leicester-based and genre-bending band Spoort have collaborated with rising R&B artist Rasharn Powell for a 60s American soul number, intertwining themes of anguish, heartache and romance. Composed during a writing session back in 2019, the track follows an upbeat and groovy sound that successfully marries the two artists together effortlessly.

“We had this super over-complicated instrumental we wanted him to write lyrics over – there were about a million different chords in it – and Rasharn just went ‘why don’t we just use the first 3?’ That took it in a completely different direction and ended up giving the track a retro-soul kind of feel, which is so well suited to his voice.” Says Andrew King, a vocalist for Spoort.

Speaking on the track, Rasharn also stated that he personally went through a tough end of a relationship which inspired this track. “I vividly remember being at my wits’ end when it came to this heartbreak. I read somewhere that writing an email to her, letting everything out but not sending it, would help. So, I did that. It seemed pretty fitting when Spoort & I jammed, that I write about that moment in my life. I’m glad it’s finally surfacing to the light of day now.”

With Spoort moulding elements of indie-rock, dance, jazz and trap into their music, they strive to never create the same sound twice. By developing their signature sound over the years, their self-titled debut EP led them to gaining significant attention by the right crowd of people. With this new collaboration with Rasharn Powell, it also marks his first release since his debut mixtape Dusk & Dawn which was released earlier this year. He also performed at the Cloud X Festival and raised money for Black Minds Matter before more recently hosting his own pop-up shop.
