Like an episode of 'The Crown', but with a Jordan Peele ('Get Out', 'US') twist, the visuals for Pip Millet's first offering of 2021: the explosive and emotional 'Running' gave us goosebumps on the first watch. A poetic soulful snapshot of what it's like to be Black and British in the wake of history. With support from none other than Ghetts, a man who needs no introduction if you're familiar with the UK Rap scene, and someone who has not shied away from calling out entrenched issues that the Black community face ('Black Rose', 'IC3', 'Preach'). Pip Millett also sticks out as a rebel with a cause, with her striking vocals and powerful imagery, she sings over and over again that 'Black and free, I don't think that's a thing.' As the drumming becomes more intense as the song progresses into Ghetts' verse, it crashes back into Millett's entrancing words. 'Will you try to understand this?'.
The accompanying video shows a dark-skinned black lady running from room to room draped in period furnishings and a plethora of white faces sneering down at her from ornate frames. Anyone can see the meaning captured by KC Locke's lens: Empire, the illusion of freedom and the fallacy of equality. Haunted and spurred on by the voices of the women that came before her, Pip Millett is fast becoming one of the voices of the UK's resurgence of Neo-Soul and R&B, flanked by incredible talents such as Celeste, Amia Brave, Nao and Joy Crookes. There has never been a more important time than right now for their intentions to sing true.
With support from leading male voices such as Maverick Sabre and Kojey Radical praising Pip on social media, it's hard to see how she would not become an even bigger sensation this year (unity comes from everyone supporting each other). Political, soulful and introspective, Pip Millett has been someone we've featured proudly here at New Wave in the past and someone to certainly look out for in the future. Trust us.
'With a sold-out national tour set for this year and an extra date just added for London due to demand, Pip’s quiet charisma and integrity continue to crash ever stronger into public consciousness and pop culture.' Lucid Publicity
