Mega Releases Defiant New Single 'My Bones'

The daughter of Ugandan immigrants, British singer Mega takes back her strength and power on her latest offering ‘My Bones’ as she favours self-love over doubt and hopes to inspire universal compassion.

On ‘My Bones’, Mega’s voice does all the heavy lifting; it rises with grace and hovers above the tribalist-influenced production with its percussion and hints of jazz elements.

It’s a rallying cry, where she admits that she had been disillusioned in a moment of her life where things seemed too much, and she felt the need to conform to an idea she did not align with. She sings “I’m sick and I’m tired, had enough of denial. I forgot my desire, like a bird on a wire” as she aims to reconnect with herself.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the new track, she says, “Over a period of time I lost myself being in environments that I can now see were toxic and were stripping me of my identity.  “My Bones” is about taking that power back that I once gave away, but not just taking that power back, but standing strong in that power.

"I feel like confidence comes from doing things we are afraid of. Fear will never go away: as long as we are alive, we will feel fear. The more we leave our comfort zone, fear will be there to meet us every time. But we are not alone. "

The accompanying video for 'My Bones' was shot in Uganda, the place where Mega's parents grew up and explores the beautiful scenery of Uganda.

This track comes off the back of a summer where MEGA performed at the Little Simz-curated Meltdown Festival in June and is a hint of what’s to come as we build up to MEGA’s forthcoming project I Am Enough, set to drop in late September.

Speaking more, she said: "This song is a gentle reminder to feel the fear but do it anyway (something I have been used to hearing in my household growing up).

Last year I made so many changes that felt scary at the time, but they were some of the most important changes of my life. Writing “My Bones” was me taking that first step and remembering that my uniqueness is my superpower.”
