J Hus Returns With Surprise EP Half Clip Ahead of Lagos Headline Show

After a hush that only amplified the anticipation, J Hus has returned with a sharp, three-track surprise, releasing his new EP Half Clip on Friday, 12 December. The drop arrives just ahead of his major live date in Lagos, where he will headline Music City Central on 20 December, and follows a brief but effective social rollout that sent fans into a frenzy across X.

The campaign was classic J Hus: minimal, magnetic, and perfectly timed. On 4 December he broke a long silence with a short post, “Lagos, it’s been a minute,” officially confirming the headline and hinting at new music. Days later, long-time creative partner JAE5 tweeted, “Are you ready? @JHus.” Hus replied simply, “This week.” Skepta chimed in with, “I’m ready when you are,” fuelling speculation about their long-awaited reunion. That short exchange set the stage for the EP’s release.

Half Clip wastes no time proving the buzz was justified. Clocking in at three songs, the project trims the excess and trades breadth for bite, focusing on Hus’ core strengths: fluid melody, streetwise lyricism, and a sound shaped by grime, Afrobeats, dancehall, and melodic rap.

The EP opens with “Outside”, a heavyweight meeting of minds, J Hus and Skepta over a JAE5 production. JAE5, whose signature touch has been integral to Hus’ career since Common Sense, delivers a propulsive, layered beat that lets Hus navigate between menace and melody. Skepta’s clipped, veteran delivery sharpens the track into an instant standout, making it a reunion that both fans and critics had been anticipating.

Track two, Banana Clip, is Hus alone, a solo flex that places his vocal personality front and centre. Produced by Dimz, Fumes Beats, 4orty, and YJAY, the song gives him space to toggle effortlessly between flow and hook. It leans into the playful bravado, sharp imagery, and sticky melodies that have long defined his signature sound.

The EP closes with Richer, a cross-continental pairing with Nigerian breakout Seyi Vibez and production from TSB and Shae Jacobs. Hus delivers grit and bounce, while Seyi injects an emotive melodic lift, creating a reflective, aspirational ending that nods to Afrobeats warmth and Hus’ global reach.

The timing of Half Clip is as strategic as it is symbolic. Dropping days before his Lagos headline show, the EP ties directly to a live moment in the heart of Detty December, a cultural highpoint across the African diaspora. For Hus, whose work has always nodded to West African sounds and audiences, the Lagos date functions as both a celebration and a homecoming. The EP itself reads like a calling card: short, potent, and designed for impact.

Half Clip also reinforces J Hus’ position as a connective figure in contemporary UK music. Skepta brings back the grime-rooted edge that has underpinned much of UK rap, Seyi Vibez highlights Hus’ continental reach, and the solo Banana Clip reminds listeners of the singular personality at the centre of it all.

At the end of a year where surprise drops and cross-border collaborations defined the musical landscape, J Hus chooses economy over excess, three tracks that say a lot with little.

Half Clip is a purposeful return, one that reasserts the artist’s hallmarks while setting the stage for what comes next, his highly anticipated headline show in Lagos, and for many fans, the sense that this is only the opening shot of a new Hus era.
