The Armani Group confirmed the news in an Instagram statement, calling him “the creator, founder, and tireless driving force” of the brand that defined his name for nearly five decades.

“Il Signor Armani,” as he was known within the company, continued to work on collections and future pieces up until his final days.

“Indefatigable to the end,” the statement read, “he… dedicat[ed] himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.”

His absence from Milan Fashion Week this past June  (the first he had missed in his career) was felt across the industry. While the decision was framed as precautionary, it sparked concern. Many feared the worst but hoped he would recover. His passing confirms what the fashion world had been unwilling to imagine: an era without Giorgio Armani at the helm.

Armani launched his label in 1975 with partner Sergio Galeotti and quickly set himself apart with a softer, more chic approach to menswear. His signature jackets, often unlined and minimally structured, became a defining silhouette of the 1980s, seen on red carpets, in corporate offices, and in cinema, they arguably cemented his name beyond the runway.

The Armani empire was built on restraint, consistency, and a belief in longevity over instant gratification. His vision of elegance was always clear and controlled - from the suits that redefined masculinity to the empire that grew to include fragrance, beauty, and luxury hospitality. Notably, Armani remained one of the last major designers to maintain full creative and financial ownership of his brand.

A private funeral will be held in Milan, in accordance with his wishes. A public mourning chamber will open over the weekend to allow admirers, colleagues, and the city itself to pay their respects.

Further reflection on Armani’s career and cultural legacy will follow.
