First Listen: Nix Northwest - ‘Sun In My Eyes’

After a short hiatus, North West London music producer, singer-rapper and multi-instrumentalist Nix Northwest unveils a brand new single titled ‘Sun In My Eyes’, a 2000s Boom bap inspired piece part of his highly anticipated debut album ‘Xin’s Disappearance’. As arguably one of the most diverse musicians who takes pride in directing and producing all of his genre-bending tracks and music videos on his own terms, this latest release is just the cherry on top of the cake and a strong comeback into a distinctly commercial industry.

Growing up in a creative household, Nix was always surrounded by music; however, took an interest in writing his own hits once he reached college. The 25 years old Hip-Hop vocalist then first appeared on the scene in 2019, who entered with full force while jamming to a jazzy ballad called ‘Paradise Pending’ - which unsurprisingly took the music world by storm. Not only was his rapping exquisite, but also, it gave a glimpse into the world of Nix Northwest. This was followed by a well-received 9-track EP titled ‘Life’s a Bitch, I Just Need An Early Night’ later the same year, gathering an impressive number of more than 15 million Spotify listeners to this day.  

First Listen

The first thing to know about Nix’ song ‘Sun In My Eyes’ is that throughout the course of his vocal performance, the artist sings and raps in relation to the character he plays; a fictional alter ego named Xin (Not to mention, Xin is the spelling of Nix in the opposite order, which could be a clue). Even though not much is known about his purpose and the role of him yet, one could presume that Nix makes use of his alter ego to excuse his loverboy actions and carefree spirit, while more will be revealed in his upcoming project.

The vast majority of the content lyrics refers to Nix wanting to spend some quality time with a lady, who he does not intend to frequent the next day. He starts by apologising for his absence and basically lays it all on the table; he is not looking for anything serious - quite a contrast to the bubbly and cheerful vibe the song gives out after the first listen. That being said, the message does not take anything away from his catchy melodies and clever lines apparent here and there. For example, when Nix raps; ‘I’ve been lonelier than Akon lately and I was hoping a couple double D-cup saves me’ referring to American singer Akon and his popular song ‘Lonely.’

It gets even more interesting when Nix (or Xin) explains that the tune was accomplished with his bare hands. This is because it occurred in his own bedroom with just enough instruments such as the keyboard to come up with the entire song. In this day and age, one could assume that it is rare for musicians to create music by themselves, yet alone play an instrument! Some will go as far as having a group of producers and songwriters write and produce an entire concept, just so that they may record the outcome at a studio session. As I’ve already mentioned, the singer-rapper places importance in making sure that his music completely derives from him.

Lastly, Nix takes a stand for his behaviour and convinces you that maybe he’s coming from a good place. Parallel to the youthful tone and easy-going sound, his attitude towards life can be determined by his age and immaturity. It is no secret that the multi-instrumentalist is rather young and he still has the freedom and time to make mistakes or share his way of life on a playful song. Throughout the track, Nix appears to be someone who has a positive perspective of the world and the cards are in his favour.

For some, it will come across as though Nix is quite cocky and full of himself; however, this is a man who speaks with confidence, or is it not? Perhaps this would also explain the need for him to express his true feelings behind the mask he portrays as Nix, who can articulate his thoughts in a manner that is both fun to listen to and notable when you break down the rhyme schemes.

First Watch

The music video directed by Nix Northwest himself and Asher Kosher can be seen as a visual interpretation of the life and story of character Xin. Rich in colours with a 70s feel, we’re guided through the process of Xin’ day, which includes a date, chilling with friends and heavy partying.

When one takes a look at the style of clothes in use, character Xin is rather a somewhat loud yet cool individual who favours a pair of shades. Even during a date at a restaurant, his confidence shines through as he places a mouthful of cake down his throat with his hands. Afterwards, while he gets with a group of friends and then receives a car ticket from a policeman, Xin seemingly shouts in anger, proving to be unafraid of authority and not the kind of person to oblige to the rules.

A conclusion that can be made is the visuals fit the mood of the song perfectly and Nix has as much as good ears as an eye for details and he understands how to keep the viewers watching. The video in itself is an extension to Nix’ vision and offers a realistic lifestyle of someone who shows little care for profound meaning.

"I feel like I’m a person of extremes - I can be very serious, hardworking and driven but also know how to get silly and loose, and not take myself too seriously."

And he added;

"I wanted this tune to try and encapsulate that contrast a little, I think. A lot of my music tackles some deep topics, but I wanted to show that I can also have a light-hearted side!"

Nix Northwest’s song ‘Sun In My Eyes’ isn’t here to persuade you of anything, but rather, accompany a listener during good times and festive moments. On the other hand, there is perhaps a reason Nix chose to specifically introduce the alter ego Xin on the first single off his debut album ‘Xin’s Disappearance’ and with a little bit of patience, we can be sure that more will be unveiled about the nature of his presence and how the storyline may unfold. Who knows? Maybe Nix will find out the downside about his daring character Xin and we would be shown a deeper side to this macho persona, eventually revealing the layers of the alter ego Xin. One thing is clear; Nix Northwest is not to be underestimated and he will always put his best foot forward, while staying true to his authentic self.
