Director Sooyoung Hahn Shows Us How To FLOAT In New Short Film

Emerging South Korean director, Sooyoung Hahn has released her short film, Float alongside the work of other amazing creatives. The film explores the initial sense of obtaining independence but also realising that we are solely responsible for shaping our own paths. Through spoken word poetry and contemporary dance, the film follows a young man in that exact moment. Shot over the course of two days in North London and Brighton, it begins on an empty London Street, Sooyoung says, “I really wanted Float to open with a scene that every young adult (who drinks) has done at least once - drunkenly stumbling down an empty street, not being able to remember where or how you ended up where you are. Staring into the empty street, you realise how lost you are. so you just... lookup. Because funnily enough, I think that’s a lot of the time when certain realisations hit you; being tipsy enough to have no filter in your thoughts without any of the distractions from the chaotic outside reality.”

Collaborating with the brilliant writer and producer from South London, Elliot Ancona, whose past work includes Tourists (DDF 2020), a play exploring the friendships between refugees and volunteers in collapsing countries. He wanted Float to depict his experiences as a young person and the trials and tribulations no one is confronted with. He explains, “It’s about that moment in life where you see the rest of your life stretch out in front of you for the first time and the paralysing anxiety and loneliness that comes with it. It’s about making peace with that void and learning to let go of the fear.”

The film also sees the work of Korean American producer, J. Chon, and choreographer Weronika Szczerek, where her passion lies in capturing movement on film.
