Before the famed Avenue Montaigne and the ascendance of  the New Look, there existed a seaside villa  in powder pink and what we’d now gleefully refer to as Dior grey. The Musée Christian Dior is hosted within this very house, a place that primed a very young Christian Dior’s imagination. Perched above the Normandy coastline in Granville, the Villa Les Rhumbs returns this spring with a new exhibition tracing the designer’s earliest obsessions that would later bloom into the codes of one of the most historic fashion houses. Following the success of Enchanted Gardens, the museum’s latest retrospective, Christian Dior. Memories of Childhood, coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Maison’s founding in 1946.

The exhibition aims to piece together how Granville shaped the couturier far before the industry did. The house overlooks the Channel Islands - with Jersey visible from the attic windows on a sunnier day - and that closeness to Britain would become one of Dior’s lifelong fixations, reappearing years later in the tailoring threaded throughout his collections. Carnival culture and casino glamour worked their way into his later fascination with presentation and spectacle, beachwear transforming into Riviera elegance, and the ever-present elements of costume design and fantasy. His mother’s gardens were also the beginning of  his devotion to flowers and femininity; his father’s entrepreneurial drive built a  scaffold for the fashion empire to come.

Across 250 archival pieces, including  dresses, perfume bottles, sketches, photography, and  personal effects,  the exhibition maps out  the emotional topography behind the brand’s visuals. Published alongside the retrospective, Dior. Memories of Childhood by publishing giants Rizzoli expands on the exhibition’s core consensus and explores in more detail how Christian Dior spent the rest of his life romanticising Granville. Christian Dior. Memories of Childhood opens from April 4th to November 1st, 2026.
