CKay Reflects on 'E CLEAR' Ahead of BANGER BOY

For CKay some things don’t need explaining, they’re simply felt. 

That’s exactly how “E CLEAR” came to be.

Inspired by a real experience, the record captures a rare sense of emotional clarity, while its stripped-back visual world reflects that same intentionality, leaving no room for distraction.

Speaking with us on the day of release, CKay reflects on the dream that sparked the song, the Lagos apartment session where it all came together, the lyric that means the most to him, and why he believes "E CLEAR" is the perfect final chapter before Banger Boy arrives this August. 

Above all, he opens up about the one thing he hopes listeners discover, not just in the music, but in him.

Anna: “E CLEAR” is finally out today. What was the very first feeling or idea that sparked this record?

CKay: Undying love.

Anna: The title is simple but intriguing. What does “E CLEAR” mean to you personally, and what do you hope listeners take from it?

CKay: It means clarity. It means certainty. It means something that is 100% SURE. Real love.

Anna: When fans press play on “E CLEAR” today, what’s one thing you hope they notice that they might miss on a first listen?

CKay:  I hope they feel what I felt when I was making it, beyond the physical sonics. I want them to touch the emotions behind it.

Anna: Is there a particular lyric on the track that feels especially personal to you? Why that one?

CKay:  “I will still love you in another life”. There’s no love deeper than that.

Anna: Sonically, “E CLEAR” feels smooth, confident and effortless. How intentional was that atmosphere, and what conversations were happening in the studio while making it?

CKay:  I was having a session in my apartment in Victoria Island, Lagos. My producer BMH, was in the apartment with Vishen (guitar and whistle) and Fez (he played keyboard). The idea, started from Vishen. He’s a very talented guitarist my manager, Joseph, discovered in Mauritius. We were having a conversation on the balcony, overlooking the city of Lagos, and he told me he heard a melody in his dream the previous night. He played it for me, and I was very excited. I asked BMH to record him. BMH laid the drums, Fez played keyboard, and the whole thing came together. I recorded it days later, alone, in my studio.

Anna: The visual identity of “E CLEAR” feels just as intentional as its melody. How did you build the creative direction behind the video, and what made the setting, styling and overall aesthetic the right visual language for this song?

CKay: I saw everything in my head. I wanted only me and the model in the video. I didn’t want unnecessary distractions. I also knew what I wanted her to look like, because she represented a real person. The music represents a real experience and a real person. I explained the idea to Z3ro, the director, and he was fortunately able to bring the vision to life.

Anna: Was there a moment during the creative process when you knew, “This has to be the final single before the album”? What made it the obvious choice?

CKay:  It was a “knowing”. I can’t explain it further than that. Sometimes I “know” things. 

Anna: If someone has never listened to CKay before and “E CLEAR” is their first introduction to your world, what do you hope they discover about you?

CKay: I hope they discover my DEPTH. I am a very deep person.

Anna: Without giving too much away, if “E CLEAR” is the final chapter before Banger Boy begins, what can fans expect from the journey ahead? Looking beyond today, how does this song set the tone for everything that’s coming in August?

CKay:  They can expect BANGERS. They can expect excellence. They can expect the real me. For CKay, E CLEAR isn't just another single, it's the final piece of the puzzle before Banger Boy arrives. Honest, intimate and intentionally understated, the record captures an artist stepping into his next era with complete confidence.
