Brent Faiyaz is the R’n’B sensation who took the world by storm in 2016 when he featured on Goldlink’s smash hit track‘Crew’, the track earned him a nomination at the Grammy’s for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Before collaborating with the Likes of Drake, Tems, Tyler, the Creator, Goldlink and so many more, Brent had been making music before this. In 2014 he released his first ever project via SoundCloud titled Black Child, which sounds prominently different to the Brent we know and love today. His debut single ‘Allure’ followed, along with another EP title A.M Paradox which went on to be widely popular with his fans, with track’s like ‘Invite Me’ and ‘Poison’ being favourites.
Throughout Brent’s career, he has always managed to keep his fan’s well fed, whether that is with a collaboration, relatable lyrics or teaming up producers Dpat and Atu to create super group Sonder. R’n’B connoisseurs will be familiar with Brent’s vocals being featured on an abundance of Sonder track’s like ‘One Night Only’, ‘What You Heard’ and ‘Nobody but You’ featuring West Midlands songstress Jorja Smith.
Brent Faiyaz hasn’t released a project in just over 2 years, since delivering his second EP Fuck The World, which peaked at number 20 on the US Billboard 200. While still maintaining his allusive persona, Brent has since released highly popular tracks like ‘Gravity’ featuring Tyler, the Creator, ‘Wasting Time’ featuring the one and only Drake, ‘lost souls’ with Baby Keem and featured on Tems’ track ‘Found’, all these collaborations have taken his fan base to a whole new level.
However, what is a sophomore album without a debut album, after his successful EP’s, Brent Faiyaz dropped Sonder Sonin 2017, which can only be seen as the baby of his super group Sonder. Sonder Son is up there with the modern day R’n’B that is shaping the future sound, as he touches on a range of issues from politics to heartbreak. Sonder Son did what needed to be done with tracks like ‘Gang Over Love’, ‘First World Problems’ and ‘Talk 2 U’, being stand out tracks from the album.
With Sonder Son being received and delivered so beautifully, it is hard to believe Wasteland won’t have the same effect on fans and critics as it is set to feature some of music’s biggest names, including Alicia Keys, Rapheael Saadiq and honourable contributions from The-Dream. Brent has already given fans a taste of what the 18-track album could sound like with the release of his latest single, ‘PRICE OF FAME’ which is self-explanatory. The opening scene for the music video sees a fan screaming ‘OMG is that Brent Faiyaz’ and is ecstatic when she sights him in London. The video for ‘PRICE OF FRAME’ is a montage of moments that Brent had decided to share; besides the opening scene the black and white music video lives up to Brent’s mysterious and illusive reputation. Brent has also provided fans with a trailer to Wasteland, which continues the elements of surprise and mystery as fan’s see Brent casually sitting on a hood of a car, while a soundtrack along with his vocals plays in the background. The end credits of the album trailer give fans an insight into the artist who will be featured on the album including The Neptunes, Jorja Smith and an endless list of industry greats.
Wasteland features some of Brent’s most popular track’s, which have been released over the last 18 months including ‘Wasting Time’, ‘Gravity’ and ‘Dead Man Walking’. For those entering their villain era, the first track ‘Villain’s Theme’ may be for you, you won't need to wait too long as Wasteland is set to be released on July 8th.
