For decades, the beauty industry thrived on the illusion of effortless perfection. Previous generations were conditioned to conceal their imperfections, be discreet about their cosmetic changes, and strictly observe gender norms, but with Generation Z, everything has changed.

As digital natives, they prioritize authenticity. They not only use TikTok and Instagram to showcase their makeup routines, but also to debunk societal norms as well. To understand this cultural evolution, exploring the latest Gen Z beauty trends highlights how younger consumers are changing what the world has always considered taboo.

A Move Toward Surgical Transparency

One of the major cultural changes is how people approach cosmetic enhancements. In the past, the older generation kept their cosmetic procedures secret. Even celebrities and ordinary people used to go into hiding for several weeks before returning and attributing their physical transformation to a new diet or a good night’s sleep.

These days, Gen Z TikTok content creators are breaking the stigma attached to body modification by recording their complete journey to get a cosmetic procedure, like a breast augmentation surgery. This includes recording their meetings with doctors, as well as their first few days after surgery.

By documenting bruised skin, swelling, and even the cost, the younger generation of content creators is stripping away the mystery associated with any cosmetic procedures. This level of transparency helps the younger generation gain insight into the reality of these procedures, and makes plastic surgery an open discussion about bodily autonomy.

Normalization of Acne and Real Skin Texture

Acne breakouts used to be an extremely embarrassing experience. There was significant media pressure to achieve flawless skin, which led teenagers to spend many hours concealing their flaws and striving for airbrushed looks. The new generation has completely turned the tables around by practicing “acne positivity”, showcasing their pores, hyperpigmentation, and active breakouts.

This trend has even made its way into the commercial market. A good example is of stylish hydrocolloid patches that come in bright colors. Through these patches, Gen Z is clearly communicating that it’s okay to have acne because it’s natural and not something dirty to be kept hidden from others.

Challenging Gendered Beauty Norms

The conventional beauty industry has always set beauty standards by gender, but Gen Z is changing all that. Since they wish to be themselves rather than conform to any norms, they are exploring the beauty industry without any restrictions.

On social media, it is perfectly normal to see men who review creams, demonstrate contouring skills, and apply dramatic eye makeup. The change can be observed in terms of how large cosmetics companies advertise their products as well. These companies are removing gendered references from packaging and using diverse models in their advertisements. For Gen Z, beauty is simply a tool for self-expression and grooming regardless of gender.

Endnote

The concept of beauty is being transformed drastically, as Gen Z chooses honesty over perfection. You will see them proudly display a breakout, blend gender lines, and talk openly about a surgical procedure. This generation is all about promoting the idea that true confidence comes from transparency.
