Tsharna is one of R&B’s newer voices that has steadily been gaining the attention of giants in the music game like Wretch 32, Nana Rogues and Krept & Konan to name a few. Hailing from Luton the songstress’ debut project ‘About that time’ is as smooth as it is sensuous providing calm vibes whenever you listen, whilst also proving her ability as an engaging storyteller.
The EP acts as a lens into Tsharna’s life where we witness her evaluate and reevaluate her understanding of what love is, as well as reflect on past relationships. The ordering of the 5 tracks on the EP matches, matches Tsharna’s maturity and growth as the project develops. At the start with the lead single ‘Think about you’, Tsharna is self-conscious, obsessing over how she is seen by her love interest, and if he’s thinking about her. Her vocals are rich bringing colour to the story she is telling, and the production has a gentle aquatic feel to it.
Transitioning to ‘Curfew’ with a jazzy guitar rift and a persistent drum kick, listeners will notice immededielty Tsharn’s tone is more confident, playfully presenting a young reckless love, rebellious and daring in nature but ultimately limited by the curfew being exposed. It’s composed of shortened notes and empathised words to push the tempo of the song.
Acting as a continuation from ‘Curfew’, in ‘Shivers’ the concept of time is explored through the repeated ticking of the clock that you hear on the track. The song is a lot more reflected in nature than the previous songs, and is seen to show love as bittersweet by Tsharna explores her ever-present feelings for an old flame.
With ‘For life’, the singer is manifesting into existence the type of love she desires, learnt from past experiences. Lastly, the final track of the project ‘Insane’, has a simple but rhythmic production that acts as the perfect space for Tsharna to come to the conclusion about the imperfectibility of love, whilst also showing that love is something delicate that needs to be nurtured in her silky voice.
Speaking further about the inspiration behind her About That Time… EP, Tsharna says, “I used the phrase ‘About That Time…’ because I frequently relive these moments in my head as if it were a diary. I prefer to think of these songs as a representation of those experiences, and the title is recalling those moments of my life. The title also has another meaning for me – it’s like I’m in a big music hall listening to the DJ introduce each new song for the night. When you hear them say, ‘alright it’s about that time we slow things down’, you just know the rest of the night is about to be nothing but R&B. In this case, I’m the DJ, I’m the storyteller providing a look into my world”.
Showing her potential with love saturated ‘About That Time’, we’re excited to see how Tsharna develops in the future.
