The Perfect Music-Related Films To Watch This Fall

With the music festival season drawing to a close and cold winter evenings getting ever closer, music fans turn their

thoughts away from muddy fields and camping under the stars to other ways of consuming their favorite sounds. Yes,

the gig guides will provide us with plenty of chances to catch bands live, but with so many different streaming

services out there, don't overlook an opportunity to see bands or genres you missed out on the first time around.

There are some great documentaries and music films out there, so just like we did in February when we provided you

with a list of film suggestions for romance in February let us suggest some great music films to watch this fall to

compensate for the festival season being over.

A Movie to Make You Feel Good - Mamma Mia

Set in the beautiful Greek islands and featuring the music of ABBA, what more could you ask for? The idea of watching Meryl Streep and Pierce Bronson attempting to sing their way through the Swedish pop legends' vast catalogue may not seem like everyone's cup of tea, but they all seem to be having so much fun it is infectious. Witness Julie Walters sliding down a creaking bannister butt first or Streep leading the cast to jump in the water; it's impossible not to get caught up in the simple pop tunes and forget about the weak storyline.

A Taste of Life on the Road - This is Spinal Tap

A documentary about a fictional heavy rock band that was so accurate even bona fide rock legends said it could have been about them - without the self-combusting drummers! Thirty-eight years on and its legacy remains to extend way beyond the world of rock 'n' roll, with Harry Potter author JK Rowling claiming the band's ever-changing drummer inspired the continual turnover of Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers at Hogwarts. The band also appeared in an episode of The Simpsons, and in this computer age, Foxy Games' online slot titles include Spinal Tap, a game based on the movie, which uses rock iconology to encourage players to spin and win. Or how about Spinal Tap's Tap Ten, an add-on for the Rock Band series for further evidence of its legacy? This is one movie that has aged well, shaped culture and is definitely worth revisiting!

The First Guitar Hero - Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix redefined guitar playing during his short-lived career, and this classic documentary captures him at his scintillating best, including legendary performances at Woodstock and Monterey as well as the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. His songs remain popular today this day both in their original form or being covered by other bands - even Goth rockers The Cure had a go at Purple Haze while he, like Spinal Tap, has his own internet presence with an online slot named after him.

From the Hood - Straight Outta Compton

The story of how a rapper, a budding DJ and a low-level drug dealer from the disadvantaged streets of Los Angeles get together to kick start a musical genre. Ice Cube, Dr Dre and Easy-E together produce a sound that's as harsh and brutal as the streets they came from - 'our art is a reflection of our reality'. Of that pioneering trio, one died young, while the remaining two leave a legacy as impressive as Hendrix or ABBA and how they overcame the challenges to get where they are today is a story for the ages.
