Having emerged from the underground scene in 2019, making a splash at just fifteen years old in BL@CKBOX Hardest U18’s Cypher, Rio has kept going and used that as momentum to spur his career on.
Since then, he has gone from strength to strength but saw a new level of success with his 2023 release ‘Favourite Girl’ which has now amassed over 2 million streams on Spotify. Rio is now on a winning streak having released several stellar singles this year, and his latest release ‘Neverland’ is no exception.
Speaking of the song, Rio says “I wrote this about losing yourself in someone else’s presence the moments you spend together lost in their imagination". The song introduces itself with a purely acoustic backdrop immediately setting the intimate tone of the record.
Once the beat kicks in and the layers of the production emerge, it makes a constant effort to never overstate itself and take the record in a new direction. Rio’s vocals glide effortlessly over the production, reinforcing the dream like state he is in when he is around that special someone.
The various vocal inflections Rio explores in the song seems to mirror his view of seeing her as someone with many different layers which he references, “Sketch her with her 100 faces, she don’t trip on her untied laces”.
The video also accentuates the intimate sentiment of the song as it is shot using a VHS, the somewhat grainy visuals add a nostalgic feel, and grants the viewers access to their memories together.
Rio has had an exciting few years. Last year he released his debut EP cobwebs in my room, culminating in his first solo show being sold out at Lower Third in London. He has also been co-signed by various coveted platforms including MTV, Complex and NME. With his recent releases and a support slot for The Rizzle Kicks in November at KOKO, he shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
