Odeal Makes the Case for Another Summer Soundtrack

Odeal returns once again to soundtrack the summer with A Good Time... The seven-track project doesn't seek to reinvent his sound. Instead, it doubles down on the qualities that have become synonymous with his music, pairing groove-led production, danceable rhythms and his signature blend of Afrobeats and R&B. As its title suggests, A Good Time… is built around vibrant, feel-good production that captures the warmth and ease of the season.

While the production is undeniably carefree, Odeal's songwriting tells a more complicated story. Across the project, he explores the uncertainty, contradictions and familiarity that define modern relationships, allowing themes of love and longing to sit beneath the EP's sun-soaked exterior. It's this contrast between buoyant production and emotionally conflicted storytelling that gives A Good Time… its identity.

That dynamic is established from the outset on ‘Rush’. Through a narrated conversation, Odeal explores a relationship grounded in realism rather than fantasy. Echoing his lover's reminder that "this isn't a fairytale", he acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding their future and the understanding that rushing cannot guarantee they'll remain together. Yet when the two are together, those doubts temporarily fade, with their connection demanding that "the world can wait", if only for a fleeting moment.

The project's lead single, ‘Coming Home’, featuring Jorja Smith, expands on those ideas. The pair's understated chemistry captures the familiar cycle of separation and reconciliation, with both artists repeatedly drawn back to one another despite recognising they're better off apart. Odeal's admission, "We professionals in arguments, addicted to the drama that you draw me in," encapsulates the addictive pull of familiarity, while ‘Love & Hate’ continues that emotional thread, exposing the contradictions that often exist at the centre of romantic relationships.

Closing the project, ‘Trying Things’ offers the EP's most reflective moment. Its slower tempo provides a welcome contrast to the groove-led energy that precedes it, allowing Odeal's storytelling to take centre stage as he admits he is "hopeless in love endeavours". In doing so, the closing track brings the project full circle, reinforcing the idea that love is often defined less by certainty than by the willingness to keep trying.

While A Good Time… doesn't offer the same introspection or emotional weight as its predecessor, it doesn't suffer for it. Rather than pushing into new territory, Odeal opts to deliver another collection of effortlessly crafted summer records that play to his strengths. There are few surprises across its seven tracks, but that's largely beside the point. 

… fulfils exactly what it sets out to be: a soundtrack for the season, balancing infectious grooves with reflections on the complexities of love.
