Montecristo Fragata Brings The Art Of Cigars To The Journey

For those who see travel as an opportunity to slow down, explore and take in their surroundings, Montecristo has introduced a new way to bring the ritual of a premium cigar along for the journey. Montecristo Fragata is a new travel humidor created exclusively for the Duty Free & Travel Retail market, combining the house’s 90 year history with a format designed specifically for those constantly moving between destinations. Presented in a compact humidor containing 20 cigars, it brings one of Cuba’s most recognised cigar names into a setting traditionally associated with departure lounges, long haul flights and discovering somewhere new.

The Montecristo Fragata contains 20 Habanos in the Duke format, measuring 54 x 40 mm, with each cigar carrying a dedicated band identifying its vitola. Made entirely by hand with a long filler, the cigars use tobacco leaves selected from the Vuelta Abajo area of Pinar del Río, a region synonymous with the production of premium Cuban tobacco. The travel humidor gives the collection a considered presentation while making portability part of the experience, allowing aficionados to carry a selection of Montecristo cigars between cities, hotels and destinations.

The blend delivers the character expected from Montecristo, sitting within a medium to strong profile that develops gradually as the cigar is enjoyed. The opening draw is smooth and creamy, introducing woody notes before moving towards deeper aromas, subtle smoke, leather and a light coffee undertone. As it develops, the cigar becomes increasingly expressive, allowing the familiar Montecristo character and intensity to build throughout the experience.

There is also a sense of storytelling behind the name Fragata. Referencing the ships that played a significant role in The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas’ celebrated novel that inspired the Montecristo name, it connects the cigar to ideas of escape, movement and adventure. That relationship makes the travel humidor particularly fitting for a brand that has spent nine decades building its own history across generations of cigar enthusiasts.

The timing of the release adds another layer to its significance. Montecristo recently marked its 90th anniversary, making Fragata an extension of a story that began in Cuba and has since travelled across the world. The cigar has long carried an association with craftsmanship and ritual, and the new humidor acknowledges the increasingly global nature of the modern aficionado, where the experience of enjoying a cigar can become part of the memory attached to a particular destination.

Montecristo Fragata was unveiled on 29 September 2026 at the TFWA World Exhibition & Conference in Cannes, one of the major gatherings for the global Duty Free & Travel Retail industry. With its combination of Cuban craftsmanship, portable design and a story built around exploration, the collection positions the cigar as something that can travel with you, becoming part of the journey itself.
