MFW SS25: Issey Miyake, The Paper Effect

Japanese pioneer, designer and Pleats Please owner, Issey Miyake appeared at Fashion Week in Milan this season for the SS25 collection of his self-named brand.

Taking the 'East meets West' concept into a new design sphere, this collection hints at spring pastels through monochromatic looks. Issey’s pieces continue to appear lightweight on the body yet hold an expensive high-quality look. Besides the elements of comfort and flexibility that the Japanese designer brings to his line, the creative direction from Satoshi Kondo focused the collection on “The Beauty of Paper”.

Guests were invited to feel the texture of washi during the show, a traditional Japanese plant fibre material, immersing them in the full experience that inspired the collection.

Models wore head-to-toe pleated washi looks, pops of colours in trench coats, face-covered veils made from the material and oversized tailored trousers. Each design flows along the body of the wearer while maintaining its structure and durability which the brand is recognised for. This collection offered garments of precise construction and showed off the craftsmanship of Issey Miyake’s name. As a designer who prioritises sustainable practices and ensures there is always a homage to the culture and heritage of the house, Spring Summer 25 exceeded our expectations.

His work continues to raise the industry’s standards in aspects of quality, timeless style, and innovation and with his ability to incorporate elements of water, earth and the sky into designs, there is no other that comes close to Issey Miyake’s attention to detail.

A ‘paper mache’ looking broad-shoulder box cut dress paired with beige tonal sock shoes informed Milan’s audience of the potential that the washi material has on the body. Issey Miyake’s ability to play with texture, silhouette, shape and most importantly disguise the construction of a look transcends its appearance into something that has to be studied, observed and appreciated. This collection was another one to add to the top shows for Milan Fashion Week this season.
