Returning with her new record ‘Losing It All’, Northfolk-born singer/songwriter Maya Law leans into the spirituality and mortifies of the blues to give voice to her artistic and professional frustrations.
Working together again with Freya Roy, who produces the haunting jazz instrumentation of the track, team up to create the perfect soundscape that reflects the mood of the vocalist.
The release is a follow-up to a string of releases coming from the singer-songwriter in 2023 including ‘Mother Tongue’ and ‘Bad Guy’.
On 'Losing it All' the alt-soul songstress possesses a heaviness in her voice that transitions into a deep rich tone that is sublime in its rawness. Her vocals sit above the intoxicating space created by a deep rhythmic baseline, and the contrasting sounds of a string synth create a dissonance.
The track is a release of the tension felt and a nod to non-conformity and the value placed on the importance of self-expression. Honest, and transparent moments you find her spiralling and drowning in doubt, or cynical about her dealings in the music industry
Speaking of the inspiration for ‘Losing It All’ Maya Law explains: “‘Losing It All’ is my creative breakdown anthem. I was having an intense writing block and general feelings of giving up in the music industry. It touches on my heritage in a similar way to Mother Tongue, but focuses on the industry and the boxes they have shoved me into in the past.
I was battling with feelings of not being good enough or never being successful in my career. Now looking back, I know that when it makes me feel good, it’s good enough - and fuck the rest.”
