Returning with double single ‘GRAMMAR / NO LOVE’, South London trailblazer Louis Culture continues to make waves in the UK underground scene. It's been one year since When Life Presents Obstacle, a body of work which has poised him as one of the key innovators of his generation.
After making a name for himself through several cult releases including ‘Naked’ and ‘CITY’, the artist has gained recognition and support from the likes of NTS, Complex and i-D. GRAMMAR reflects on the beginning of Louis' journey in music, with his rise in recognition coinciding with the formation of the Elevation Meditation (EM) collective. Selling out their debut headline show at the Lyric Theatre in 2017 was where it all started. The collective went on to host a stage at Boiler Room in 2019, followed by the release of Louis' debut EP Smile Soundsystem in May 2020.
Since then, the only way has ever been up for the young artist. Known for his lyrical honesty and vulnerability, Louis reflects a universal experience of a young person living in the city trying to find their way. Marrying his love for electronic music with rap, the upbeat sound of GRAMMAR pairs with a catchy hook about finding a balance between work and play.
Speaking on the making of GRAMMAR, Louis explains, "Me and Pullen (producer) were in Paris earlier this year. We linked Kmxel and Louis Dureau at his studio and did this in under an hour. Despite the sound not being where I currently am (musically), I still have fun making these types of songs.”
As for NO LOVE, it's "one of the most sincere songs I’ve ever written". Reflecting a melancholic mood through the slower beat, the single expresses sensitive lyrics and an authentic tenderness that allows listeners to connect with his music uniquely: "The subject matter kind of poured out of me as if it was weighing on my chest". The combination of his eclectic sound and lyrical rawness distinguishes Louis Culture's music as being on the cusp of an exciting future.
