Taking in Jorja Smith’s new single ‘Little Things’ in wonder, the track is perfect for the upcoming long summer days and blue skies that are fast approaching.
She blurs the lines between contemporary jazz and the funky house rave scene from the 80s as the instrumentation is played with urgency. Energetic drums loom large and minor piano chords subtly inject moodily at times.
Taking inspiration from the feel of jazz Jorja finds herself enjoying the spontaneity and randomness of life as she bumps into her crush. Thanking divine forces, she urges them to escape together.
Her voice perfectly expresses pure emotion as she demonstrates her depth in pitch as it transitions from high to low. Boldly, she teases “With you it's such a sweet escape/ So if we leave will anybody notice.”
The song is pretty self-explanatory”, Jorja explains “I had a lil concoction - rum, ting and a magnum. When we started creating this song I was just imagining hearing this walking into a party and seeing someone I’d had my eye on. It’s fun!”
The accompanying 80s-inspired video, shot by British Director Bolade Banjo in Peckham, South-East London tells the romantic tale of a young couple who meet and fall in love at a party. During the video, we also witness interviews from people who share what they find most attractive about people.
The director sums up the cinematic video it’s about “A snog with someone you're crushing on… The lyrics and instrumental were very much dedicated to the direction of the video, it was about finding the stylistic language that made sense. Speaking with Jorja about how she wanted to approach this it became apparent; ‘Little Things’ was within itself…”
