Hugo Chegwin Drops 'Necklace featuring Jianbo

South London rapper Jianbo styles on the latest drum and bass livewire instrumentation produced by Kurrupt FM’s Hugo Chegwin.

A deep cut, that is equally inspired by jungle ‘necklace’ lasts just under 2 and a half minutes Jianbo’s hard-hitting lyrics and storytelling provide his pessimistic viewpoint and sharp perspective as he attacks a lo-fi beat with his typical forwardness.

The beat does, however, divert to an erratic breakbeat with 808 percussion that matches Jianbo’s intensity. The sudden change jars you away from the gentle feel of the first section and into a rawness that reflects the lyricism.

Materialism is explored, alongside risk, and the challenging decisions that Jianbo has made in the past, as he raps, “Clean up with the moves I’m reckless, tryna get money but they failed, so feckless, but all I really got is this necklace”.

Reflecting on the process of producing the track, Hugo said, “I wanted to make something that could connect to underground rap culture, my interpretation of it. I’m always trying to find my version of that and also lean into the influences of me growing up when Jungle was big as it’s the music that I feel birthed so many genres and musical tribes, garage, grime, D & B.”

This is just one of the tracks off of Hugo Chegwin off his debut EP, Shark Tooth Necklace, released next month. Chegwin, who is one of the co-founders of the much-loved radio station and collective Kurupt FM, has been steadily building his profile as a solo artist this year.

He has already released his debut single, the soulful  ‘With You featuring Liverpool rapper Koj’ which will also be on the forthcoming EP.

Summing up his journey so far, Hugo said: “I've always made beats and music, it's a big part of how I heal, stay grounded, and find calm. It’s my mindful escape.

“This time, I wanted to create something more than just instrumentals, something that really reflects who I am and that I can be proud to share.”

In the past, he has worked with Emeli Sandé, Plan B, Sam Smith, Mary J. Blige, and Maverick Sabre.
