Grantley Hall Acquires One Of The World’s Rarest LOUIS XIII Cognacs

The latest addition to its Norton Bar is LOUIS XIII Black Pearl Cognac, an exceptionally rare expression limited to just 398 decanters worldwide, with only 27 available in the UK.

The arrival places Grantley Hall among the world’s most distinguished destinations for rare spirits, giving guests the opportunity to experience the Black Pearl by the glass across the hotel’s restaurants and bars. It is an unusual level of access for a release of this scarcity, transforming what could ordinarily be a collector’s object into an experience. The story of the Black Pearl begins with an exceptionally rare eau de vie selected by LOUIS XIII Cellar Master Baptiste Loiseau from the House’s historic reserves. Its significance comes from its connection to Le Grollet, the historic cellar where the story of LOUIS XIII began. It is the only eau de vie in the collection identified as retaining the distinctive character of Le Grollet, a legacy passed from former Cellar Master Pierrette Trichet to Loiseau. Generations of cellar knowledge are consequently distilled into an expression that exists in remarkably limited quantities.

The presentation is equally considered. The Black Pearl arrives in a reimagined LOUIS XIII decanter, its midnight blue reflections drawing on the mystery, depth and darkness associated with Le Grollet. Grantley Hall has taken that idea further with a purpose built Cooling Cellar within the Norton Bar, allowing the Cognac to rest at temperatures as low as 13°C in conditions inspired by its historic origins. The cellar sits within a bespoke American walnut trolley accented with brushed brass and deep red detailing, designed to complement the bar while allowing the serving ritual to travel throughout the hotel.

The acquisition also continues an extraordinary relationship between Grantley Hall and LOUIS XIII. The Yorkshire destination is currently the only venue in the world to house every LOUIS XIII format, ranging from the 5cl Miniature through to the ultra rare Rare Cask 42.1. The Black Pearl therefore adds another chapter to an already remarkable collection, with just 27 decanters across the UK making its presence at Grantley Hall particularly significant.
