Superstar DJ/producer Fred Again.. continues to push his unique style of worldbuilding further by taking an integral part of his viral USB002 tour stateside. Last Thursday New York City’s East End Studios was host to “Boris Acket - Secret Life Exhibition”, a one-night only event showcasing the installation which has accompanied Fred throughout virtually every concert he’s given over the past year. Anyone who’s assisted a gig or seen a video can recall Acket’s work instantly. Massive sheets of fabric hang over the audience, bending and shifting throughout the show like a “breathing roof.”

This event marks another step forward in Fred’s constant drive to build a world around his musical pursuits. Early before he broke through to the mainstream, Fred garnered online attention by posting “Studio Sessions” shot from a London balcony. These videos were more intricate than your average DJ set and show him producing and sampling live on camera.

Fast forward four years and heaps of global visibility, and Fred continues to try new ways to bring his music to the public. Last September the British DJ announced a rather unique rollout for his ever evolving “USB” album: he would play ten shows in ten different cities, releasing a new song each one. Even when the songs would come out, that wasn’t the end of it as some would see alternative versions come out. Most notably the Skepta collaboration “Victory Lap” saw five iterations come out, each adding another verse from rappers spanning from South Florida’s own Denzel Curry and Grime legend D Double E. It’s this commitment to a holistic rollout that makes this exhibition feel like a genuine extension of the project rather than a cynical marketing move.

The event also had its own unique sound as the installation was set to a reworked version of Secret Life - Fred’s collaboration with Brian Eno. Whether the installation will continue to travel is yet to be seen.

Fred Again.. is halfway through his NYC residency, only to be followed by another one in London later this spring.
