dexter has just released her hotly anticipated project, Fortune Cookie. This project features 6 songs; 3 of which had been previously released as singles ('Vexed', 'Something Real' and 'Pressure'). Her strong offering comes directly off the back of her debut EP, I Do Love a Good Sandwich, which garnered plaudits from a number of publications to date.
dexter's artistry only occupies one fraction of her rise in notoriety, as recent supporting efforts on Denzel Curry and Fred Again’s respective tours have helped to both grow her name and expose her to new audiences. An impending headline set at The Moth Club looms as dexter continues to stride in her own unique path toward stardom.
The project itself is extremely introspective in nature as themes of change, individuality and belonging are pondered upon. The Fortune Cookie kicks off with the garage infused 'Something Real' which discusses dexter's desire for truly getting in touch with herself and seeking distance from situations not worthy of her attention, the line “Take back all the ways you made me feel' is extremely summative of the messaging present within this track.
The idea of identity and its constant stranglehold on her thoughts play out differently in tracks '1day' and 'Play Pretend', with both songs dissecting the idea of seeking rest bite outside of oneself; '1day' in the shape of admitting her jealousy towards an individual with regards to how they’re perceived and wanting to mimic said individuals actions to receive similar adulation, and 'Play Pretend' seemingly coming towards the end of her identity crisis with her using the plea of “I know in my heart I can’t always play pretend” throughout the tracks chorus to emphasise this notion. Both tracks make use of very different instrumentation to deliver said messaging as the bassline house/bedroom pop present within '1day' differs greatly to the softer indie-pop that 'Play Present' features.
The songs 'Vexed' and 'Pressure' explore the idea of external influences quite intently; the former detailing with the frustrations attributed to a change in character of a close individual, and the mental carnage experienced in attempt to find reasoning for such actions. The latter however discusses the external pressures that made dexter feel like she had to alter fragments of her very own personality.
The emotional to-and-fro’s experienced throughout this Fortune Cookie seem to hit their apex in the song 'Out Of Touch', where dexter pours her heart out and delves into the magnitude of effort she’s exerting to feel any degree of normality; whilst simultaneously also threatening to succumb to the pressures of change that lace this entire project.
