David Koma Revs It Up With His Biker Inspired Pre-Fall 2022 Collection

Speed, and efficiency are two concepts that seem to run the modern age - we are constantly racing against time, to accelerate progress and creativity. This all slowed down during the pandemic as we collectively went through periods of lethargy. Now, David Koma is ready to rev it up again in his newest collection - an array of Biker Girl inspired looks which invoke danger, speed and glamour.

Koma uses the fast paced nature of the motorbike and racing scenes as a metaphor for the fast paced nature of the business and creativity scenes, as he explores and reinvents the Biker Girl uniform. He draws direct inspiration from Adeline and Augusta Van Buren, the iconic sister duo who pioneered female involvement in motorsports - from becoming the first women to ride solo on motorbikes across the US to being active members of the Suffragette movement, they serve as strong inspiration for the Koma Girl to emulate.

The clothes are skin tight, sleek and seductive. Leather of course takes centre stage throughout the collection in the form of oversized biker jackets, structured leggings and slit dresses - tyre track embossments zoom across skirts, whilst red and blue ombré fringing drapes down arms and hemlines, invoking the image of oil stained garments, all visually connoting the theme.

Red and black form the collection's main colour palette, colours notoriously associated with danger, visually asserting the danger of the racetrack.. Fire-printed silk satin, flame shaped cut-outs and crystallised crocodiles crawling over the neck and hemlines of the pieces serve as a continuation of the visual metaphor.

The seductive glamour we’ve come to expect from Koma isn’t lost throughout the Biker Chic - many of the aforementioned designs are explored through sequinned embellishments laid across skin tight dresses, cut out jersey jumpsuits and sexy bandeau tops. Koma keeps the stunning craftmanship of haute couture, and blends it expertly with reinvention of the authentic racing uniform.

This collection comes as a welcome successor to his recent Resort 2022 collection, another that translated pandemic consequences into clothing. The Koma Girl, who partied it up like it was the 70s as the world re-opened is now ready to race ahead to an exciting new adventure full of speed, adrenaline and of course, glamour.
