It's quite clear that Charaf Tajer's Casablanca is a brand that is centred on a sophisticated, and savvy, sartorial sensibility and their new SS22 collection builds on this opus. Entitled 'Masao San', in homage to a close friend of his who introduced him to the eclectic world of Japan and Japanese culture, the collection vitally injects some much-needed colour and vibrance to the increasingly gloomy world that we currently find ourselves in. The collection is like an embodiment of GTA's 'Vice City' with a contemporary flair. It simultaneously feels nostalgic and modern, and this is the most fascinating element of the collection.
Subverting traditions, Tajer opted to present the collection as a mesmerising short film that feels as much James Bond as it does 90s karaoke bar in Japan, mainly due to a soundtrack that captures the mood of the collection in a magnificently. The film was inspired by 90s Japanese tech ads that aimed to capture the necessity of functionality and stylishness, and this is demonstrated in the film. Pastel colours permeate the scenes and also the collection, elevating the garments and the cinematography to impressive heights. The use of colour throughout the collection is also noteworthy.
Regarding the clothes themselves, there is a welcomed complexity to the tailoring and the structure of the garments. They seem to ebb and flow with their wearer in a dynamic, vigorous way. The accessories are also a highlight, with an array of sunglasses and handbags particularly standing out. The collection offers an evolved version of the preppy styles and trends that we have seen in the past.
A closer look at the collection:
LOOK 41
The colours here are delightful. There is an elegance and prowess in this look that makes it one of the stand out looks of the collection. The tailoring here is also notable.
LOOK 2
Just look at the depth and layers of her dress. Everything here is absolutely on point; the handbag, the bracelet, the earrings, everything. This already seems like it would be a fan favourite. There is a simplicity in this look that is genuinely sublime. These types of looks are Casablanca at their best.
LOOK 3
It seems like the Sukajan bomber jacket trend came and went but it has been revamped in this collection. This look characterises the Japanese aesthetic that is present in the collection and is an interesting take on the Sukajan jacket craze. The colour-way and branding work cohesively to make this one of the most attractive looks in the collection.
