Best 5 LGBTQ+ Dating Apps: Features, Safety and Community Compared

The world of online dating is risky indeed, especially for the LGBTQ+ population. Without strict app safety controls, there is an opportunity for “bad guys” to infiltrate, harass, bully, intimidate, and, worse, arrange in-person meetups that result in physical harm. While some of the responsibility for safety falls to the individual dater, an LGBTQ+ dating app must bear the greater responsibility for establishing a safe and secure environment for all its members.

Just What Features Constitute Safety and Security on LGBTQ+ Apps?

Here are some key features.

Identity Verification: The app must have a method for verifying a newcomer’s identity and periodically rechecking it, especially when a user changes profile photos. On many apps, newcomers must submit a selfie or even a video, which is then verified before that newbie can become active. Other apps may allow optional ID verification, but those who go through the process will receive a checkmark badge on their profile, and users are encouraged to connect only with those who are verified. There are many apps with various levels of verification.

Honesty in Profile Information: This is more difficult to verify, but many apps have sophisticated algorithms that flag wording or phrases that are often synonymous with dishonesty and then request further proof of what has been stated in that profile.

Clear Guidelines: Many apps have published standards of behavior to which registrants must agree. If they do, there must be easy and effective methods for users to report any violations of these standards. Once reported, these must be thoroughly and quickly investigated, and if the violation is significant, result in suspension or expulsion.

Data Privacy: This is critical. All users of a dating app have the right to have their personal and financial information encrypted and securely stored behind the strongest next-generation firewall technology. This would be ideal, of course, and many apps are exploring the possibilities. One feature that currently helps is that many apps have an in-house IT team that consistently monitors for breaches.

With this in mind, let’s have a look at five queer and queer-friendly apps that take these features seriously.

1. Taimi - A Foundation of Safety Features And Policies

The taimi dating app is a huge LGBTQ+ - exclusive dating app that has several measures in place to ensure safety and security.

  • ID Verification: Taimi requires live selfie verification for full use of the app. If this verification is not given, users have only limited access. There is also an option to verify one’s identity, which places a green checkmark on the user’s profile photo.

  • Honesty in profile information: This is a tough one for dating apps. Taimi, like most apps, relies on user reporting if another user is not fully honest about who they are. Once this is reported, Taimi does investigate and will take action if they determine the dishonesty crosses a line.

  • Clear guidelines: Taimi has very strict and published standards of conduct to which all new members must agree. If there are violations of any type, users are encouraged to report them to the support team. If violations are serious, the perpetrators face suspension and/or expulsion.

  • Data Privacy: Taimi uses SSL encryption for the transmission of personal and financial information from a member to the app. So, when someone attempts to access that data, they will only see garbled junk. As well, Taimi has its own team of in-house IT specialists who monitor breach attempts.

2. Hinge - Safety Through Transparency

Hinge is a queer-friendly, mainstream dating app that focuses on long-term relationships and meaningful connections. It emphasizes authenticity, compatibility, and transparency while using technology to ensure member safety.

  • ID verification: Hinge has probably the tightest verification process around. Newcomers must create a short video selfie right within the app. This is then compared to photos that have been uploaded on the profile. A liveness check then determines if the video was from a real person rather than digitally altered. If the verification fails, users can try again or contact customer support.

  • Honesty in profile information: Because Hinge is focused solely on long-term, permanent relationships, users are highly motivated to be honest. If not, the “victim” will block them and report the dishonesty to site administrators.

  • Clear guidelines: Hinge has published community guidelines on its site to ensure safety for everyone. Violations result in consequences.

  • Data Privacy: Here, users can access a privacy policy that is clear, detailed, and written in plain language. Additionally, Hinge only keeps personal and financial data as long as necessary for its use. That data is then erased from the system. A user can close their account at any time; their account will be erased.

3. OKCupid - Using Advanced Tech to Boost Safety

  • ID Verification: OKCupid uses a liveness check like Hinge but also 3D face authentication. Newcomers present a video selfie, and the face is then scanned to ensure authenticity. The 3D face authentication uses a facial geometry template to make sure the same person is in the video selfie and profile photos. Facial templates are deleted within 24 hours and only occur with user consent. While this process is optional, having the verification badge is critical for users who want authentic connections.

  • Honesty in Profile Information: OKCupid uses a personality quiz based on question prompts. The process promotes honesty as users seek long-term connections/relationships and also operates to flag questionable behavior early on.

  • Clear Guidelines: OKCupid has both community guidelines for on-site behavior and a large Safety Center with educational content and tips for dating safety.

  • Data Privacy: The site uses a two-factor authentication login process, something that adds security and shields an account from hacking and identity theft. Users control who may see their profiles, what information is shared publicly, and can shield their identity until comfortable revealing it.

4. Tinder - An Emphasis on User Empowerment

Tinder is an expansive dating app that has welcomed members of the LGBTQ+ community. The app has heavily invested in an array of policies, tools, and technologies that promote safety while allowing users to control their in-app experience.

  • ID Verification: Users submit a short selfie video, which is then compared to profile photos via facial recognition technology and biometric verification, both of which ensure profile authenticity.

  • Honesty in Profile Information: As with most apps, profile honesty is a challenge, but Tinder has a few features to promote it. Users are now prompted to state relationship types and goals they seek; AI-powered message screening provides easy reporting of dishonest or inappropriate behavior; and an in-app panic button will notify authorities.

  • Clear Guidelines: There are published community guidelines and efficient processes for reporting violations. Violators do face consequences.

  • Data Privacy: Identity verification results are deleted quickly. Users may hide their identity until comfortable with a connection. Two-factor authentication login is an effective protection, and encryption technology is used to protect user data. Users may also manage many of their own privacy settings.

5. Hornet - Location-Based Dating Made Safer

Hornet is a geolocation app created for men who are interested in casual dating. Designers have implemented unique features that allow users to safely pursue their goals. It also includes a social networking component for those seeking community and connection.

  • ID Verification: Hornet has a voluntary identity verification process where users submit a selfie for review. Once their identity has been verified, a blue checkmark appears next to their profile, ensuring other users that they are trustworthy.

  • Honesty in Profile Information: Hornet is an international app that balances the importance of transparency with the reality that not all men live in places where it is safe to be open. While face-forward images are not mandatory, the app also has policies against using stolen photos or using fake identities. AI-based identity verification combines with user reporting tools to facilitate this.

  • Clear Guidelines: Hornet provides a lengthy and explicit user guidelines document. Members are expected to review it, and are held accountable for following the rules and policies it contains.

  • Data Privacy: Hornet’s online privacy document details which information is collected, how it is used, and who may have access to it. Users are also told how to request information about their data and how to request that it be removed. This document includes specific details relevant to individuals living in different regions.

User Safety Starts With Education

Tools and technologies are key components of safety and data privacy, but they are only part of the picture. The safest dating apps combine these with education, empowerment, policies, and guidelines. Anyone considering an LGBTQ+ dating app should review each platform’s policies, features, and reputation before making a final decision to tap the download button.
