Sample Sessions: Lil Yachty's 'Lil Boat 3'

Sam-ple Sess-i-on

1. Noun

No stops. No skips. A one-take review.

'Lil Boat 3' is Lil Yachty's highly anticipated, third studio album and the final instalment of the Lil boat series. This follows the release of 'Lil Boat 2' in 2018 and a teaser of it's arrival the summer of 2019.

1. Top Down

None of the lyrics had any reload effect, but it's catchy. There was nothing I really remember about the lyrics actually, which is disappointing as lyricism is Yachty's strong suit. The production is exactly what I would have predicted a Yachty intro to sound like, that's not to say it wasn't good, it's excellent, but also predictable.

Highlights: It's catchy. An explosive intro.

Lowlights: If I play it one too many times I may become sick of it, but it's catchy.

Lyrical content: 6

Production: 8

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 7

2. Wock in Stock

Yachty comes in a lot stronger lyrically, things he's saying are standing out. The bit where he said something about someone being broke, telling them to 'keep tissues' made me laugh. The production sounds very 'galactic', that's the only way I can describe it. It follows on nicely from the last song, I like that he's not abruptly switched to a heavier beat just yet. Definitely a recreational song. I'm obsessed with how he delivers on this beat. It's as if he wrote the song first and the beat was made around it.

Highlights: Good vibes. I wonder if this will make it to the club scene

Lowlights: I'm not amazed yet

Lyrical content: 7.5

Production: 9

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 8

3. Split/Whole time

Lyrically, nothing stuck out but I also think it's because I was distracted by the beat, I'd have to listen to it again.

Production is impeccable throughout. That switch that came in after 1.30 was unexpected, I thought the song was about to finish. The manipulation in his delivery is so effortless. By the way, this guys voice is sexy?

Highlights: My favourite so far and I'm typing this as I'm still listening to it

Lowlights: I think the first half should have been longer

Lyrical content: 6.5

Production: 9

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 8

4. TD

I just know the bare minimum was put into the production of this song but that doesn't take away from the fact this it's laced with crack. Everyone that was featured executed thier delivery with such artistic eloquence, specifically Tierra Wack. I do still feel Yatchy could have come in a lot stronger - it's his song.

Highlights: Tierra Wack

Lowlights: It's a bit too long. I started to lose interest towards the end

Lyrical content: 9

Production: 8

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 8

5. Pardon me

Future's toxicity prevails yet again, this song is sensational. The beat is so fitting for future, whoever came up with idea to feature him deserves all the accolades. The chorus is my favourite part, it sounds like a nursery rhyme.

Highlights: Future.

Lowlights: I would have liked to hear a bit more of Yachty.

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 9

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 8

6. Demon Time

Before I press play, going by the title I hope its a strip club anthem.

And I was right.

I don't think this song has any reload effect from a lyrical perspective but absolutely in it's production. This is the strip club anthem i've been waiting for, I think it might be my favourite one so far. I like the shouting in the back, I wonder if its a sample. I think this one song is emblematic of Yachty's typical flow, a textbook yatchy song

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 6.5

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 7

7. Black Jesus

Yachty's flow saves him here, because again nothing stood out lyrically but i feel like he's saying s lot because of his delivery. The production almost makes me want to add it to my chill playlist. His flow is consistent throughout, on this track his deliverance is very theatric, like he's performing a story.

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 8

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 8

8. From Down Bad

These lyrics sound like they're going to be easy to learn, l think I knew the chorus after hearing it for the second time. The production is similar to the last in that it's another one I'd add to my chill playlist. It's giving me heavy pop-punk vibes, it sounds like it could be an Owl City song from the 2000's.

Highlights: This one song is what affirms his versatility to me

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 8

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 7

9. Love Jones

I love. From one play it sounds sad, like a heartfelt song. Again, what is with this Y2K emo/pop production? The little break that happened at 0:55 seconds was beautiful. I really like this nursery rhyme flow he does on this instrumental.

Highlights: Perfect for the partynextdoor, Drake, Bryson Tiller heads.

Lowlights: Too short

Lyrical content: 8

Production: 8

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 7

10. Can't Go

This song sounds like it could be on the soundtrack to a coming of age, Y2K teen film. But for some strange reason it works. Without Yachty's vocals, this could really be played in the background to the Devil wears Prada, Perks of being a wallflower and the likes, His flow is repetitive, I'm not completely taken a back.

Highlights: This one sticks out the most, it's different in a good way

Lyrical content: 6

Production: 8

Delivery: 7

Total Average: 7

11. Oprah's Bank Account

This song sounded very commercial, as it started playing and when drake came on this solidified it for me. Again, another Owl city type song.

Highlights: Drake

Lowlights: Did Dababy need to be here?

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 8

Delivery: 7.5

Total Average: 8

12. Range Rover Sport Truck

I don't have much to say about this song because I wasn't entirely impressed. Had I been allowed to pause and restart, I still wouldn't have. No replay value. I wasn't blown away by anyones delivery or flow, but I do think the instrumental was perfect for a Lil Keed feature.

Highlights: N/A

Lowlights: I would have liked to hear young thug on this one

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 7

Delivery: 7

Total Average: 7

13. Lemon Head

Any song where the artist is rapping about buying girls designer bags is automatically a favourite. I'd like to know who produced this actually, this might be my favourite beat on the tape so far - it sounds like a video game. I loved Yatchy's singing on the chorus.

Highlights: Yatchy does so well on hooks and this is a prime example

Lowlights: It could have used a feature, someone like Gunna would have been perfect.

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 7.5

Delivery: 7.5

Total Average: 7

14. Don't Forget

'You always seem to leave when it ain't sunny'. This is another emotional one, but on this song he's much more explicit in his emotions than he has been thus far. I believe he's singing about his experience at at a failed relationship with someone who he says was only with him for the money, and the fact I was able to retain the storyline tells me he delivery was clear and coherant. The production sounds like an Avril Levigne alt pop rock type beat.

Highlights: Clear lyrical message

Lowlights: N/A

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 7.5

Delivery: 8.5

Total Average: 8

15. Up There Music

I'm disappointed he skipped a Playboi Carti feature here. I'm not sure what happened two or three songs ago but i'm realising that things got very emotional very quickly. This song especially sounds cathartic in a sad way as he sings 'Baby girl don't die on me'. When the instrumental initially started playing, I wasn't sure which direction it was gonna go but i was pleasantly surprised.

Highlights: Ad libs

Lowlights: N/A

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 7.5

Delivery: 8.5

Total Average: 8

16. Westside

I'm grateful that he brought it back to rap, the album was quickly beginning to feel way too personal and emotional. The production works hand in hand with the flow which, correct me if i'm wrong was a Grease the musical sample? Overall I have little to no flaws with this song, In fact i think it's now my favourite and its another strip club anthem.

Highlights: Uptempo record with great production and flow.

Lowlights: N/A

Lyrical content: 8

Production: 8.5

Delivery: 8.5

Total Average: 8

17. Till The Morning

I wasn't entirely impressed or excited by this song, it sounded like the most commercial one. I'm especially disappointed because I was expecting Young Thug to come in stronger and carry the song, but his delivery was subpar.

Highlights: Production

Lowlights: Bland song overall and sub-par feature

Lyrical content: 6.5

Production: 8

Delivery: 7

Total Average: 7

18. Whew Chile

The lyrics made me laugh, is this supposed to be satire? The production sounds galactic here too, I think it would have worked better if it was pushed up chronologically. This is another song where Yachty performs, his delivery is again very theatrical and sincere.

Highlights: The 'ahh ahh' ad lib.

Lowlights: Comes too late in the tracklisting

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 7

Delivery: 8

Total Average: 7

19. Concrete Boys

The introduction to the instrumental is so well orchestrated, it almost sounds cinematic. His singing and the way he plays with his intonations in this song is exemplary. I wouldn't say it's the best song but I would most definitely put it in my top 3.

Highlights: Cinematic sound and one of the nest on the album

Lowlights: Lyrical content

Lyrical content: 7

Production: 8.5

Delivery: 8.5

Average Rating: 8
