After only releasing her raw ep Tell Jimmy at the beginning of this year, Manchester singer-songwriter Pip Millett doesn’t waste time in gracing us with her presence once again with her latest heart-aching offering ‘Better’ on her surprise return to the COLORS studio.
She made her COLORS debut in 2019 with ‘Make Me Cry’, and has only grown into a musician that is assured in her artistry. It seems like a full circle moment for her after all the growth she has done since then, a critically acclaimed debut album in When Everything Is Better, I’ll Let You Know and a refined pen that composes authentic stories that are as captivating as Tell Jimmy.
Her distinct sound of intense soul and deep R&B in which she has experimented, is revested in this new offering produced by Dre Skul who lays the foundation of a minimalistic guitar instrumental for Pip.
‘Better’ is a way to allow Pip to express her genuine uncertainty and doubt in her typical honest way which is disarming but also her search for something unidentifiable.
Her distinctive, rich vocals at times also allow her dissatisfaction regarding the romantic situation to creep in but it is ultimately held hostage by her own insecurity. Beautifully, Pip sings in that powerful and tender way that like always, chocks listeners with raw emotion effortlessly.
Summarizing the pattern she’s fallen into, she sings “ I search for something new but trip all over you, I hate that you made me, I hate that I’m so, I hate that I’m so insecure.”
Now looking to higher heights it will be interesting to see if a potential sophomore album is in the works for Pip and what will that sound like. Pip is also scheduled to open the Somerset House Summer Series on 11 July 2024.
