Mascolo Invites Listeners Into Experimental Journey With Debut EP 'Just US'

Fresh talent Mascolo has recently released his debut EP, Just Us, released through YES YES YES, owned by regular collaborator and fellow artist LP Giobbi via Defected Records. The EP as a body of work, explores and conjures up a sense of deep connection through his experimentation of his classical roots. Throughout the project, Mascolo anchors his sound through his early classical training and uses the artistic freedom given to him by the Yes Yes Yes team to reach out to his listeners in a shared understanding of self-expression.

The EP starts with the synth-led track 'All I', which teases the listener by injecting a bouncy, staccato style-based production. The overlapping vocals that envelop the production never give too much away. Mascolo chooses to use a level of restraint with the song as an invitation to the listener to delve deeper into the world he is creating.

The EP then effortlessly transitions into 'Where You Been', a retro style experimental-based production reminiscent of early Empire of the Sun, with luscious vocals that add warmth to the project. Lyrically, Mascolo wrestles with the feeling of wanting to surrender his heart to a previous flame, knowing the search could drive him crazy.

'Pick Me Up' fuses a broad palette of instruments to create an enticing, groove-filled track, that would fit perfectly filling the speakers of an evening boat party. Sandwiched between two songs that incorporate prominent vocals, 'Pick Me Up', is a hypnotising slice of escapism that allows the listener a level of space and freedom.

The following track 'Won’t You Stay', immediately gives a sense of grounding, with strong guitar expressions being used as a tool to create a level of intimacy that is also showcased in the lyrics. The song then slowly builds with a beckoning beat pattern, creating a level of tension before rippling into a rich burst of jazz-inspired instrumentation that evokes a feeling of relief and clarity.

The penultimate song, 'Almitira' opens with sounds of the world, including people talking and the road outside, offering the listeners a moment of reflection. Light piano chords then slowly seep in, adding a feeling of nostalgia to help encapsulate a tranquil ambience. With a slight electronic beat pattern being added to the mix to not stray too far away from his experimental dialogue, Mascolo is able to capture an essence of wonder with 'Almitira'.

Closing song ‘Call', seems to act as a subtle nod to the different genres he has previously experimented with and more. With hints of house, funk, soul and more being blended to create what is quite possibly the highlight of the project. Mascolo teases the production by creating several building crescendo breaks before the track closes with a sense of euphoria.

Being hailed as one to watch by DJ Mag and having previous performance slots at many world-renowned music festivals such as Electric Forest, Mascolo looks to carry on his success with the release of Just Us, and is sure to continue to hone his skills both in the studio and on the stage.
